Help please - any ideas?

I washed my 57 1200GS and put it away in the garage overnight, Rode it to work and after I went around a roundabout, it cut out and would not restart.:mad: The bike has not many miles on it.

The engine turned over, but would not start. I called BMW recovery, but after about 25 minutes, it started as nothing had happened. I rode it about 8 miles home without a murmour!!!!!:nenau

Obviously it'll go back to Cannon's on Tuesday, but any ideas. help etc
(apart from the silly - get rid of it etc!!!).....Thanks:)

sounds like you got water into one of the many electrical bits and bobs which caused it to cut out.

Fair enough! I only used a hose and soapy water, I thought they were a bit tougher then that. A little bit worried as I have several trips abroad soon. Love the bike thou......:)
 
Hmmm not a problem I have had on mine in 28k. Most important to return it to Dealer as it sounds like a poss canbus problem which needs to be checked up on - it should register a fault code in its memory. Although I have only rarely directed a hose at mine, and then only from an angle to ensure no unexpected results I have ridden through some pretty substantial downpours for a couple of hours.

My 07 did exactly the same last year (May) after I washed it- cut out,display screen went completely blank and then after a minute or 2 I started up and it never did it again. I mentioned it to Cannon this week when it was serviced and they found nothing, the moral of the story is- don't wash it!:rob

The screen was fine and no fault came up, it just turned on as usual, went through its checks and fired, but wouldn't run. It did run a couple of times to think of it and then died!!!!. I had ridden it about 8 miles before this inccident!! In that case I can only imagine the heat off the engine dried out whatever was the problem ? whilst it was stationary. :nenau

I just thought the problem would have manifested itself on initial start up!!!:nenau

I will of course be alot more careful in future if this is the case. I will contact Cannon's on Tuesday just incase!!!!:)
 
Fuel pump controller would be my first bet. Or maybe water in the gear indoicator sensor, so your bike thought it was in gear?

Dealer should be able to tell you what from their diagnostic machine.

It's hard to believe in this day and age that designers can't foresee problems like this (water and electrics, washing bikes, not unusual:nenau) especially on bikes like these. All this aside, this is still the best and most versatile bike I have ever owned, from track days, touring to off road,is there anything to match it?:clap
 
Went to Cannon's today.........a dodgy intermittent fuel controller. New one ordered. Second one today apparantly from over the weekend......:mad:
 
.........at least you weren't surprised when they told you :)
 
...or by the looks of the design the 08, but I don't think there's been any reports of failures.
 
A final update......

I rode my GS to Cannons and it cut out and started five times. Eventually the problem over come itself and the bike ran as usual, and I managed to get to the dealers in an hour which should have taken me 20 mins max!!!

Cannon's changed the unit in 2o mins and I was out on the road again without fault. Thanks to Lee at Cannon's for looking after me so well.....

The dreaded fuel pump controller had struck again.........:spitfire
