G650X clutch life ?

How long is a piece of string?
Riders treat the clutch in all different ways.....
Me, it's either in or out, no clutch dragging unless absolutely nescessary.
Miles now cover 12000.
Agreed, cable required adjustment at 4000.

I'm waiting for LTP-Nathan..... he has some stories to tell!:comfort

:D

My bike has about 12k miles on it now, and still on the original clutch plates.

It's also on it's second clutch cable, but only because i like to keep it feeling "fresh".

What has failed has been the clutch operating mechanism. twice.

This was caused by a worn clutch cover, causing the 2 shafts that operate the clutch to jam together. They won't come apart with anything else other than brute force and colourful language.

I wrecked 2 sets of these shafts until i found the problem.

this is a picture of the replacement cover from bmw, which now has a steel sleeve in the centre to prevent wear:

there should not be any side ways play when you locate the centre shaft of the clutch in the cover. if there is any "slop" change it. a new cover is around £75. New shafts are around £100 iirc.

I should also add, my bike has spent nearly all it's life out on the trails. it has done very few "easy" miles.

Appreciate advice, shall take a butchers next oil change.

So the original clutch release shaft ran straight into the alloy cover!
Did it make some nasty noises leading up to the seizure?

The clutch release shaft does run in the alloy cover, but it slides back and forth as it releases the clutch pressure.

The issue i had was the cover got worn, and the release shaft (in the centre of the clutch) and operating shaft (that runs in the clutch cover), miss meshed and jamed themselves together.

there were no warning signs or noises.

I fitted the 'uprated' Clutch cover, as a precaustion at 5000 miles and it costs about £75

Prevention....:D

Johnny,
just phoned my dealer (useless Clarkes in B'ham) and they can't tell me if the part they list is uprated or not. There's no history of the part number changing. The only way to find out is to order the thing from Germany and they reckon I'm then obliged to buy it!

Who did you get yours from?

cheers
G

The 'uprated cover' is from an F650GS, ie, Dakar650 IIRC....?

There is a slightly different part number IIRC

When i'm back home, I'll have a look at the box and the old casing

There's a thread all about on here or AdvRider

I think some bikes got the uprated part casing midway through the production so it's difficult to tell which has and hasn't got it

Try those nice chaps at vines in guildford- they should know all about it as they supplied the parts for my clutch issues.

27000kms on my original clutch. No problems. New cable already fitted and waiting hot swap but so far, not required.:thumb

Four years of big bike rallies on mine and no road work and clutch is fine even though it's had a fair bit of abuse.

Speaking to Craig Bounds at a rally a couple of months back, he said to me that his experience of his G650X was that the clutch remains fine up until it lets go all of a sudden with little warning of slippage.

Looking at the previous posts, I've come across two bikes that have had real issues with sticky or notches in the mechanism when pulling the clutch in and releasing, but as said, no problems with mine despite having a bit of a life!

When mine failed i decided to get it done as early 2007 model took it all off yesterday and all looks fine underneath although the old cover got ruined coming off the replacement shaft and pivot went on but really stiff to use also the spring washer i cant work out how it goes on as its much bigger
Info talen from the hubb wher the guy failed in greece i think and batersea listed all the parts will find the link if that helps
Gonna try a new cable as well today!!

linky

It says on the HUBB link that the update involves a new cover, I wonder if the updated cover has a bigger boss allowing a bigger seal to be fitted? That's not solving your problem though......
