my gs ran well for 8000 miles i love it but it mustnt love me
it developed a dangerouse fault shorltly after a gear box read clutch seal repair
the throttle kept coming on of its own accord you could just be sitting on the bike at tickover and without warning start reving to 5thou and back without touching the throttle culminating in trying to put me accross adual carriagway whilst waiting for a safe gap
another symtom was overheating header pipes read fluresent orange
failurer to start not that i was bothered by then
bmw assist back to dealer 200 mile from home this of course happend when taking an advanced test at the driving standard agency in bedford
at least ive got credable winesses
dealer identified a defect on the throttle bodies and went on to replace all to do with the throttle controls kept the bike ranit arround 300 mile
pronounced it fixed and returned it to my door the week after

one trip to matlock bath no problems 200miles happy days are here again
so off to not so sunny yorkshire bimbling along the hawes road when i happened upon a landrover up front ..resrticted view so close the throttle
but... yes the bike keeps driving me forward i decide to overtake the landrover open the thottle and ....nothing no power no increased forward motion ..so panick hard on the brakes and pull in ..bike then stops ..re boot the computer ignition thing bikes ok get to haws have dinner
ring dealer because the bike now wont start
get jumped and like a fool tell dealer im bringing it in for
the problem to be re invstigated ..yes i know i shouldnt have but you get pissed off bieng stranded from home every 2nd trip out
ride bike 90 or so miles fine
1 mile from dealer filtering on outside of traffic light que ..lights turn green ..lovely open the throttle and :censor::censor::censor::censor: me no engine response no brakes only what you call residual all the cars i was overtaking are now undertaking me betweeme and th opposing traffic..have to wait for opposing traffic to clear and drift to the opposite kerb
dealers computer showed three faults but all now rectified in other words nothing wrong ...but there is isnt there
wife wont now use the bike and as we tour ive had it
i couldnt sell it to anyone even somone i didnt like so there it is
any surging of revs on your machine is a symptom beware
yours sadly steven :bow

Feck me, I thought mine hated me with my breakdown, but not THAT much. Good luck with the replacement. Honda? KTM? :D

Apart from the geabox/bevel probs this sounds the scariest yet  imagine that happening on pass in the alps with a hairpin approaching feeeeeeeeeeeck that.

What were the faults and who or what rectified them
i was present when they plugged it in to the diagnosyic machine ..it showed a abs fault and another cant remember ..strangly a parking light fault as well .. but the computer said they were no longer present
thats where the problem lies if its not there ie intermitant no one knows for sure whats wrong .. therefore as last time they were replacing parts as a precaution which obviosly didnt work ??
mind you i have been given the use of a brand new!!! suzuki bandit???

Bloody hell. Makes all my prevous gearbox & electrical issues seem minor.
Can I suggest raising this a bit higher? My last GS had a couple of power surge moments but only when stationary.

I'm sure from my own experience that this sort of suff is taken seriously by the powers that be so will be interesting to hear any updates you have.

Did about 700 miles last weekend on a GS no probs though....

How old is your bike?

march 05....ive never seen anything like it apparantly the thottle cable operates sensors or some such thing and isnt directly in control of the bike ..as i understand it anyway ..
it started with a high tickover 2000 or so and then it went silly it doesnt surge it just revs its nads off betwwen tickover and 5 thou like you were twisting the throttle to and frow which may explain driving forward and then nothing during my landrover overtake.. non overtake ??

is the @ not a short version of at? In the ASCII set it is defined as Commercial AT

Thanks for that. When I'm telling someone me email address,it's sounds stupid saying,"the AT symbol"...at least now I know....

In German this is known as the klammeraffe or affe schwanz i.e. hanging monkey / monkey's tail. I think that is a really nice use of language - the @ symbol really does look like a monkey's tail clinging to a branch.

I had problems witn my first GS.. finally swapped for another at 7500.. after lots of problems.. from ABS to misfiring... resulting in replacement of many parts including the wiring loom..

( There's lots of old threads on this site bout it.. )

Anyway.. some time after.. I visited the dealer and my old bike was sat there for sale - after it'd clocked up a further 1000+ miles as their demo...

I asked if they'd finally sorted it and they said yes.. it runs like a dream.. hence using as a demo!!!

It turned out to be cracked procelain on one of the plugs... causing the electrical "brain thingy" to throw a wobbly.. They said it was "a nightmare" prior to discovering that fault.. as the Diagnostic was giving false readings because of it!?!

This was after numerous "BMW specialists" had tried to solve the issue for the dealer!!

Something so simple causing so many random faults and behaviour!!!!

Mmmm!

Cheers

Pedant or pedarist or even just plain silly, I can't help feeling that this thread could do without smart alec comments. I hope to goodness that a definate fault can be found to account for the bike's behaviour. It is clearly un-roadworthy at present, and as such unsafe to ride. As for a replacement bike, it really depends on the fault finding or not. In the mean time it might help if you could get the observer on your advanced test to put his recollections of the event in writing. Hopefully he will be able to support your account.

Perhaps we should apply the same zeal towards correcting the misuse of the English language, as to the rectification of motorcycle faults. :thumb

For info.. The Dealer is Astles - Service Manager Richard.. No complaints bout them what-so-ever.. Excellent service.. I thiink they learnt a lot bout the GS and its new technology whilst trying to fix my problems... As for the replacement GS.. Got it begining of Sept 05.. then travelled europe etc.. currently got 11k+ on clock and it's never missed a beat... I lurv it.. but my first one was a fekin nightmare when it started playing up!!.. for both of us (me & Dealer).. ;o)
