£498.52 First Service - Comments Please

Well after reading this thread I contacted my BMW dealer in Peterborough and my bike a 6k service in July so will not need another until 12k which they quoted at £320.00 inc VAT.

Now that is what I call a good deal.

Still another 5k to do before I need a service but knowing the cost is just £320 makes me feel happier.

I have had quotes around the £220 mark for a 12k service, they do seem very up and down.

I was told the 6K is "cheap" at about £180, 12k about £220, 18k same as 6k and the 24k is the "big one" and would be about £350. If this holds true that seems pretty reasonable as franchised dealer servicing goes.

Still £180 to change oil and filter is hardly a give-away as you could do it yourself in under an hour for about £45, but you do tend to get a "free" cuppa in most BMW dealers

Are you not going to bother doing the valve clearances then? :nenau

Are they every 6k?

I thought "Modern" engines had moved on a bit, my last 3 bikes have had 12k / 24k and 28k intervals for adjustment and on my last Yam none had moved anyway.

I guess they are pretty easy to do (compared to in-line fours with shims under buckets and all the cam-out hassle) so I guess your talking 2 hours labour plus parts, so take it to be about £80 an hour for labour.

Sorry to hear of your problems but i had the same sort of shafting from Park Lane when i bought a K1300GT SE. I managed to go over the first service by 60 (YES SIXTY!!! ONLY) miles and they not only invalidated my warranty ...

What the f*ck r you on about? You have been told complete and utter bollocks here. Did you take it up with BMW?

Guys
Not sure if I have been over charged for a service. I have typed the invoice contents as I can’t use the attachment functionality on the site. I was invoiced this by BMW Motorrad Battersea. I have a 2006 R1200GS that I purchased from South London BMW when it had 2000 miles on the clock. They serviced the bike prior to me picking it up; I subsequently took it to Battersea with 8000 on the clock for what is effectively the 6000 mile service.

Please note that for completeness I have included the £29.65 for the MOT that I asked for you should discount this when looking at the amounts below.

Please add your comments; it would be great to hear any thoughts / similar experiences on this. I was a bit surprised at the cost as there was absolutely nothing wrong with the bike. It would be good to know if this is the going price.

Having looked at this one a few times the answer would be no.
What you've had is a 6k service plus a 4 year annual . The bike is an 06 & we're in 2010.
The brake fluid issues are that you've had the front & rear abs wheel circuits done ( every 2 years) but then its had the control circuits done as well which are every 4 years.
I assume the "oil change "is for the rear axle which is done every 2 years or 12k.
"Brake check" is listed on the service sheet & is a chargeable extra - its nothing more than working through a specified check list on the GT1 & most of what's on is already encompassed in the service.
I think you'll find most dealers don't charge for that bit - but don't forget Park Lane is subsidery of BMW.
"take off rubbers" will be the throttle body vac take offs (where you connect your vac gauges to) & they do split/perish over time
Factor in their labour charges & the bill looks plausible

Somone with sense...........................at last:thumb

It all makes sense!

It all comes back to the simple fact that if you go 'shopping' in Park Lane (or stay in a hotel there etc.) it is assumed that you are not the sort of person who is going to make a fuss about a few quid here or there - all you can expect is a better cup of coffee than the mug you might be provided with by your local back street mechanic. If that is not the case then you have the right to complain to BMW!

My 600 service was done at 1278 Miles.I been away up Scotland.

The second 6k came in at 8352 that was Barcelona trip time.

No hassle from my dealer.

 £500 for a service! That's not for me.

My last service cost me £20 for oil & filter. Job done!

£218.18 for the annual + 6k done today at Bahnstormer where I bought the bike from new :thumb2. Great service and nice guys to do business with. Oh, and free collection / delivery from Newbury....I think they have a deal on at the moment.

I cannot comment on the service price but..........

I have scanned most of the threads in this post and I cannot really comment about the service cost issue but I would like to share my experience about BMW Park Lane.

I can comment from the viewpoint of purchasing a new GSA (i.e. being a buyer) and also from the uncommon veiwpoint of being a supplier (i.e. selling THEM stuff).

It is my opinion that they are a great bunch of lads. From the top down I have always been treated with respect (from BOTH veiwpoints), the new bike was perfectly delivered (I have had some rust problems with it but the speed with which it is being sorted is commendable). Nothing seemed too much trouble and at this early stage I only have positive comments about them.

From the supplier angle they are very appreciative of the work I do and very supportive of it - I get treated far better than I do from the majority of my `day job` customers! Communications are good - I have had emails returned very quickly from the top (and I mean the top) downwards.

I accept we all have our own opinions but I also think that it is right that we can consider opinions from the full spectrum!

I can say that I would happily purchase again from them and I am not saying that because they have purchased from me.

I agree in principle

There are many of us who ride a BMW because we expect BMW service. If that means paying a little more - well, that is not going to be too significant; for instance i can get my tyres changed at all sorts of places, probably mostly OK, around here; BUT I prefer to have them done chez BMW, pay a little more and see the boss or head mechanic take the bike out for a quick test run afterwards. I have been faithful (if that is the word) to BMW for well over 30 years (half my riding career) and If I didn't get that service I would be prepared to switch to another maker straightaway. Whether it is a car or a bike (or even a lawnmower) sticking with a dealer you know and trust is preferable to 'shopping around' in my experience;;

Yep, I agree

Yes, I agree - in most cases you get what you pay for. It is my perception that Park Lane would turn themselves inside out to put something right and also they would hold themselves very accountable whereas with other dealers (cheap ones) they tend to have very little after sales service.

I have driven BMW cars for nearly 2 decades (my wife also has one) and I really cannot fault the service I have had over the years.

Service Costs

Mark

Let’s not confuse what this post is about; this is not a product or service quality issue.

BMW Manufacture quality bikes and I absolutely love my bike and would be totally gutted to part with it. The service I got from South London BMW when I bought my R1200GS and from SBW Motorrad when I got my F650GS was excellent as I am sure it would be at Park Lane. I would not consider making a change in manufacturer and this is taking into account the environment we now find ourselves in with other options available Multistrada, Tiger 800 and Tenere and so on.

In addition I cant fault the quality of the work that BMW Battersea or any other as you call them Cheaper BMW Dealer has ever done for me. It has always been of a high quality, on time and I have a nice clean bike at the end of it as well. I don’t believe that BMW would allow any of their dealers to drop these standards.

Quality of the coffee on the other hand may be questionable but I am just happy they give me one in the first place.

The Issue is the cost and lack of clarity around servicing up front. If BMW Battersea want to learn a lesson from this post then they should make sure that every one of their customers knows exactly what they are in for when they drop their Bike off, and yes there are unforeseen costs and all they need do is pick up the phone, which I think they do anyway.

Fair Point

Fair point mate and well said.

I just wanted to make sure a spectrum of opinions are posted and only in fairness.

Regards, ride safely,

mark.
