I was talking to my local dealer this evening and told him I was about to start looking for a used ADV with a max budget of £7.5K.Without any stock to offer me he advised I be careful when buying and watch out for imports which may not have the spec of the UK bikes and will be worth less when selling.

So my question is will I get a used UK ADV from a BMW dealer for £7.5k or will I have to look at imports. What are the plus or minus points of buying an import over a genuine UK bike.

Or should I save my cash and buy a genuine UK standard GS.

You'll get one for £7500 if you shop around.
No difference between imports & UK models except speedo and headlight dipping, which can be altered on all GS's (see owner's manual) and you can get a s/hand speedo from a breakers, but a KMH speedo won't fail an MOT.
The dealer is talking B*LLOCKS.......Blue Bell by any chance.
After all, every BMW Bike is an import, Tossers

MacP,

I reckon you'll get a used Adv for that kind of money - no trouble. Why not look at this site? Loved and well looked after machines... If you've got a part exchange, look at the BMW site - it'll give you a rough idea of what's available in the second hand line around the country (log on to 'used' bikes) - Alternatively look up 'Dealers' and they've all got a used section on their sites. I'm not sure how up to date they are but it's worth a look.

Re Imports - some can be fine but I was never entirely sure about the mileage and service history so I tended to steer clear of them. Some dealers do alot of imports, others don't. In my experience alot of imports have a few add ons and most have Remus etc.

Nothing particularly wrong with a standard GS in my opinion - not as 'cool' but I'm happy with mine!

Yep, as the guys say..... the dealers would like to sell you an inflated priced bike, as they have rents and profits to worry about. There are bargains and bikes at your price out there.
I brought my 1150 with from SA when I came 2 years ago, and it still goes just as well as before, the MOT does not care about km/h speedos..... it is your responsibility to manage your speed.
The lights can be adjusted if it came from a "left hand drive" country. In my case in South Africa, we drive on the correct side of the road like in the UK and Japan, so no alterations etc....
SA eing as sunny as it is, also ads the benefit of "warm " winters, and we never get salt on the roads, so bikes age a whole lot better. Find a bike you like, if you pay less because it is imported and "INFERIOR" you will sell it on at the same disadvantage. I will buy an import anytime, especially and Adventure.
