► Alternative screen options

How tall are you virtually? I'm 5-11 and rode a demo last weekend to find out that I can't live with the windblast of the little stock shield so I'm here to find out all I can before buying the bike. A possible additional prob. may be that I'm a wide body and all these optional screens seem narrow and the bike demands narrow design..

After the deafening roar of turbulence behind the Wunderlich Ergo Screen Hoch, I'm ready for something else and less noisy. My candidates so far are either the new adjustable Ergo Screen or the TT Desierto fairing.

In terms of adjustability ( disregarding the outrageous price tag ) my favourite so far is the Desierto.

Looks very adjustable, both in angles and height:

Hi F650Dakar_Norway

Have you considered the Givi screen the High one. I got mine from Hornig I think its one of the biggest out there (at the moment) Mine has been on my F650 for a while now and im pleased with it.

its a fixed screen (no adjustment) the only improvement i would want is if the lower part up to top of instrument panel was solid black in colour (I keep thinking about painting the inside)

If you want another view on it contact Paddy - GunZenBomZ he recently fitted the same screen to his F800GS (and he is a more experienced rider than me)

I do not know anything about the wonderlich Ergo !

The TT Desierto screen from what I have viewed is by far the best looking screen I have seen and i now the adjustment is up and down but also tilts forward and back. would anybody use all the adjustments :nenau

I do not think its any higher than the Givi if not the same! Or if it wraps around more at the instrument panel:nenau but for me the price £574.56 as of this morning http://www.touratech.com/shops/008/popup_image.php?pID=9315&osCsid=54158dfc0781ebf9df3b8e42bf5dd877

compared to the Givi EUORO's 112,90 http://www.motorcycleparts-hornig.com/BMW-F-650-GS-08-and-F-800-GS/Windscreens/

I cant justify the cost with my personal spending!

If you do go for the TT (as it does remain in my mind as a "I WANT")
put lots of pictures and reports about it here, I think theres a few people here waiting to see this:thumb :thumb

good luck in your choice

Interesting stuff.

How much higher would you say that the windblast goes over the screen at it's fullest extension? I'm 6'2" with a 34" inseam so will be looking for a bike with the standard seat height. It's not going to be much good for me if it's still catching the top of my hat.

Incidentally, I'm assuming that the gap between the two parts of the screen provides relief from the back-pressure you can sometimes get with big screens.

UK GuesSer

I'm the same height etc as you, but even having come to an 800GS from an 1150 GS with Adventure screen, I don't have an issue with the stock screen. I think the main windblast hits my upper body rather than helmet, and taller screens might just push it up to the area of my head. Even in current temps I'm riding approx 200 miles/week and am happy with it as is. I'd definitely try the bike as standard before shelling out on a screen.

Since this is now 25 pages long.... would it be a good idea to condense and clarify all of the options without all the other fluff? :)

If you go to UserCP, edit options, and change 'number of posts per page' to 40, you reduce the thread to just 11 pages. :augie

EDIT: I've removed about 150 'fluff' postings so my computer now shows 7 pages.

When I have a couple of hours free I'll consolidate some of the comments about the commonly used screens so they are all in one posting.

A bit more feedback on the Ergo Vario.

I did the off-road ride at the Sunny Shropshire Bash over the weekend. Had the screen high for the ride up from London (and the ride down to London the day before). Good wind protection at motorway speeds. For some reason the helmet is quietest with the visor up, which is possible with this screen. Not so advisable if a bug gets past my specs though! In its highest position the top of the screen does wiggle a bit but nothing too distracting. Its a lot quieter for me than the standard Ergo.

I dropped the screen right down for the off road stuff with improved visibilty and less screen exposure should the bike go down. I lost count of how many times the bike went over on ice, ruts and in the river! At one point I was riding between two deep ruts and the front wheel slid off into the right hand one. The bike went way over onto its side and the top r/h corner of the screen went into the muddy bank. A tall screen would have been trashed but the lowered vario was fine.

Adventure Spec bars took all the punishment with no problem. Brake snakes saved the levers from snapping off but I have ordered a folding gear lever for future escapades. You can see pics of the screen in action in the Off road thread opened by Ferret in Past Events...Sunny Shropshire Bash. .

I'm on the red F650GS twin.

I have just come back from our first big trip on my new F800GS - from Cascais in Portugal to Morocco. The rain and wind was grim the whole week :( and the only moan about the bike is the rubbish stock screen. The Ergo Vario sounds what I am looking for, up for the winter and long rides, down for the summer here and for a bit of off road. I am 6 ft, 33in leg and would appreciate and feedback from anyone similar height before I order one. Cheers.

im just over 6' similar leg. I can not coment on the Ergo Vario! I have the F650GS started by upgrading to the F800 screen about 50mm gained, (waisted effort realy) then went for the GIVI large screen huge difference. but as from today I have the TT, Desierto F fairing screen, which has up down and tilt. il post some pictures when I get round to it and what i think the difference is! ...... :D :thumb

Be intrested in the difference it makes. Vario about 165 euros here and the Desierto a massive 525! Seem to be a very similar concept with the TT being able to tilt and better looks. I wonder how much tilt there is and how much real difference it makes?

The Desierto F fairing on the F650GS (Twin) fitted yesterday, has 3 major components the black metal base frame work, the black plastic wrap around Fairing which are both fixed. Then there is the tinted upper perspex screen.

the screen lifts up and down and tilts whilst up or down!

here are some pictures taken today!

Screen up and upright.

AdnentureDay030.jpg

screen up and tilted fully back, it can be tilted and held anywhere between these points!

AdnentureDay031.jpg

you can see the design line which is the low setting as follows. in this position it also tilts back and forward to where it suits you!

AdnentureDay029.jpg

from this side view you can see the slight, curve, lip that aids wind deflection.

AdnentureDay034.jpg

another big benefit is the gap/spoiler between the black plastic and perspex screen which reduces pressure turbelence around your lid.

AdnentureDay032.jpg

here is the inside view of the control mechanism which you can see is two dials each side.

AdnentureDay028.jpg

To sum up here it is on my F650 I rode it today in the Rain with fully extended in the summer I will drop it down and also see what effect the tilt has if you look at the black plastic lower section it has a small beak which compliments the beak of the bike, compared to my previouse large GIVI screen the turbelence to my Lid is dramaticaly less.

I think its.................

Thanks for the pictures Dean and the video, looks a great piece of kit. It will be interesting to know how much difference the tilt angle makes when you get chance for a full test. Keith.

Yes its well made and well designed, with a lot of variations to meet everyones needs! I will let you know about the tilt angle effect as soon as I can! :thumb

I was thinking about it for a long time its a tick off my list :thumb its a plus on the bike:thumb

Poor man's Desierto?

The Desierto looks good but for those of us who are too tight to pay nearly £600 for a screen I wonder if a Vario fitted with Tobinators would get the same result? I don't see Tobinators listed on NN for the 800/650 but a clever chap with a hacksaw.....! Any views?

That's the BMW Touring screen with its BMW aluminium support brace.

Got it myself, but it's too low and provides too little weather protection for my personal body height to be practical in adverse weather. Especially behind other vehicles - whose road muck wear down my Schuberth C2 visor with alarming regularity...

That aerodynamic modification looks interesting though. I'll start experimenting with a similar farkle soon.:beerjug:
