Broken Side Stand - Beware

Just a cautionary note for everyone. I've just been to Normandy with a mate to finish off his running in. Boarding the ferry, everyone else just left their bikes, and went to the bar. I decided to wait until satisfied that my bike was secure. Good job too. Whilst Mr Frog(Brittany Ferries) was strapping my bike down there was a breaking noise followed by a grunt from the Frog. I managed to catch my bike before it completely flattened him. The side stand had broken clean off. This proved to be a real pain whilst away. Try getting off your bike some time with panniers etc and no side stand!

I'm fairly sure it had probably been going for a while, and the strapping down was the final straw. Earlier this year whilst in Spain my bike was parked alongside my mates 800GS and I remarked that mine seemed to lean further than his. The consensus at the time was that mine was more laden. I now realise that a fully laden bike would actually lean less.

I have a pic, which if I can get it from my phone to my PC, I'll post. This clearly shows rust inside the stand, and on the stub that remained. I suggest everyone inspects their stand carefully.

broken side stand

mine replaced at service three weeks ago took an hour to get the old bhttp://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/250503/eek7.gifolt out

My side stand has bent slightly but makes the bike lean quite a lot considering how little the bend is:nenau

it bent when I used it to climb off the bike when i had panniers on, but not fully laden - just little legs and a lot of girth.....ahem...:augie

£75 for a new one:eek:

managed to secure an ebay special:) but forgot to confirm the length :(as it was advertised as 650/800 i wrongly assumed it would fit:blast so if there is a 650 owner who requires a new stand there is a 800 owner who can help.......dohh:rolleyes:

Why not take the ebay special to a metal fabricator and get them to use it as the basis for a strong sidestand that will fit yours.

That is sh!t. Sorry to hear. I take it you have a centre stand.

I have noticed that there is some lateral play at the bolt on my side stand. Is this normal? :nenau

Yes, I have got a centre stand. But just try getting off your bike with panniers and no side stand. I went away for 4 days (D-Day Landings etc), and still can't believe that I didn't drop it!

Yes, a bit of play is normal. There are 2 bushes there, a brass one which is a push fit in to the mount, and a stainless one that goes within that one. I fitted my stand outside NOG with a new stainless bush, and it has a little play, but still less than their demonstrator.

There is a previous post on here, where a few people noticed that the bolt was loose. If anyone decides to take theirs apart and grease/replace bushes, remember to take the side stand switch off first. If you just undo the side stand bolt you'll mash the switch up.

What was the cost of a new side-stand? Mines been commented on by many bmw-engineers. That it's further over than the newer 800's. This might be the kick up the arse to swap it over.
