► Clutch drag, slip and faults

it could be (hopefully) a dicky cable, possibly stretching, worth trying another i suppose, downside is, if there is something wrong with the clutch it could go beyond repair

You have checked both ends of the cable? Could just be something loose.

There is a history on these bikes for gear lever and side stand bolts to come loose, so no reason why the nuts on the clutch cable adjuster can't come loose.

44,000 miles and only adjusted a little bit, once, thousands of miles ago :)

So maybe something wrong I'm afraid :nenau

And on a side note......how much slack are you guys with the high mileage opting for? The by the book recommended amount or the 4mm plus range?
Just curious because I want to set up mine like yours.

Sounds like a shagged clutch. Mine was done after 6000 miles and was then replaced under warranty. Vines in Cateram said it burnt out due to a fault within....My situation was such, I would be riding along at a steady pace then the engine would suddenly rev up into the red as if the clutch was slipping. Since replacement, it’s been fine without a adjustment. Good luck!

I'd definitely go with a little more clutch free play. There seems to be a penchant for BMW to adjust it too tight from what I've seen, which is guaranteed to cause a bit of slip and wear.

+1 to everything said so far ...

Hopefully you're still in warranty, so will be able to take it up with the dealer.

Otherwise, I'd check the adjustment of your lever to make sure you have enough slack and that it's not catching on your hand-guards (if fitted of course!),

Hi all

I have just covered 4000 miles from new on my F800GS, and am alarmed by how much I keep having to adjust the clutch.

I am not overweight!!
I do not cover/slip the clutch!!

The wear is so great I might soon run out of adjustment on the cable. Has anyone else experienced this. Am I likely to need to re-place my clutch shortly?

Many Thanks

Richard

uh oh
My mates brand new 600mile on clock clutch blew on his.
It completely disintegrated.
Started jsut the same way - slipped up in kielder during shake down for morocco trip the next weekend. Adjusted it, Adjusted it a little more, got to morocco and it went completely in the middle of Meknes. How we got back to the port i do not know.
Good luck fella.:augie

The clutch on mine was replaced at 6000 miles as it was properly knackered by that point, couple that with rear wheel bearings that destroyed themselves at about 5000 miles I reckon these things are built out of chocolate...!

So I have got rid of mine and gone back to my R100 airhead. The build difference is incredible, I know that the bikes are built to a cost now - more so than before - but I'm shocked at how bad the 800 was. The exhaust would have been the next thing that would have needed sorting judging by the speed of corrosion. It was a decent enough bike, if a bit dull, but I certainly would think carefully before buying a modern BMW again after it. :(

Hi sorry to jump on the back of this thread, but i was wondering how people set up and adjust the clutch? What is meant by free play on the clutch and it being adjusted too tight? My clutch engages pretty much at the end of the lever travel, it doesnt slip and isnt causing problems but i would like to adjust it to engage after about 3/4 of lever travel. Is their a way i can adjust it to do that?
Thanks for any help.

Clutch adjustment?

Hi, i've been reading various threads and there is a fair bit of info about clutch slipping troubles on the F800 GS. My clutch engages pretty much at the end of the lever travel as was wondering if it's possible to adjust this so it engages after 3/4 of the lever travel. I was also wondering what is meant by the clutch adjustment being too tight? Any thoughts or help appreciated. Cheers.

I called my local BMW centre and they recommended Venhill Engineering who make up cables to order. Sent the original in the post this morning so should have the extended version later this week.

The riser is great

But it's all worked out quite expensive. I had to order an extended brake line with the riser and when I fitted it, discovered the clutch line was also too short. Shipping and tax from the US added up!

The version I have allows me to switch from my bent 7/8 bars to Renthal Enduro Fatbars and move the bars forward and back. It brings them much closer to me now so I'm not stretching, my back is straighter and my grip is much lighter. I can also stand on the pegs without having to bend forward.

Cheers. Malc
