► Hand Guards, handlebars, risers and levers

I just took delivery of the Kaoko throttle lock today, and installed it along with the Touratech hand guards I've had sitting around for a while. Installation was a breeze, and I managed to get in a short test ride before the Oregon rain hit again. Works like a charm, and the guards do a great job of keeping my hands out of the wind. I've always gone with Throttlemeister with my other bikes. But they don't have one that works with anyone's hand guards yet. I think the Kaoko is easier to use. :thumb

That bike looks totally sorted out David! Well done!! Can you tell us more about the Kaoko throttle lock? I've got the BMW handguards - think the Kaoko would fit? Would I have to cut anything (I'm not a mechanic by any stretch!). I was also thinking about a simple palm rest for my daily 30 minute blasts to work here in SoCal.

Thanks for any info or advice. Planning a trip with a fellow 800GS rider to Death Valley in the next month or so; should be a blast! ;-)

Touratech are far from flimsy, they will definitely save your levers from a spill
The bikes handle bars will take most of a slide anyway.
Have you consider the BMW 1200 ones. Better weather protection if you just sticking to the roads!

Hmm, after reading this thread, I'm finding it hard to decide which handguards to purchase now.... :nenau

I can understand the different points of view from various posters, but I don't want to buy the wrong guards and then regret it afterwards....

Is there a way of getting a vote of what the best handguards are for someone who intends spending most of the time on the road?

Cheers

I've got the BMW F800 ones with large handguards and spoilers.

Pro's
The metal bars in them will deflect an elephant
Wind/Rain deflection is pretty good on the move

Con's
You lose the bar end weights - more vibration.
Wind/Rain deflection at standstill/low speed not so good.

If you're going offroad a lot I'd have no hesitation in recommending them.

For mainly road travel, I've seen the 1200GS guards fitted and these seem to have larger hand shrouds for better wind/rain protection - and keep the standard bar ends.

I didn't see the purpose of having the metal bar in the hand guards, even off road, and was put off by all the problems people were experiencing with vibration.

So I went for the handguards used on the 1200GS/GSA which are cheaper and offer better weather protection. I currently have handlebar muffs fitted over the top to keep the pinkies nice and warm.

The Kaoko will definitely NOT work with the BMW hand guards. AFAIK, none of the twist-on/off throttle locks, e.g. Kaoko, Throttlemeister, work with BMW's hand guards. The reason is the bar end design that incorporates that alum. bar. Your only option right now is a palm rest, though I have seen some penny-tech, rubber band contraptions that may also work (for a while).

Have fun in Death Valley, Kevin. If I thought I could get across the snowbound passes here (and back), I'd join you!

Risers

Of the people that fitted the Touratech Risers what did you do with the spare metal sheath that was fitted to the original shorter handlebar bolt as seen below?

from what I could see there was no way to fit it with the new risers and would not leave enough thread exposed at the bottom for the bolt as see in this photo below;

Hiya Tim. Do you have any photos of the handguards on your 650?

I kept hold of them just in case - originally I though maybe there would be a bit of movement within the rubber but have done 5000+ miles on and some heavy offroad and no problems - if anything there is less vibration in the handlebars at speed now.

Tim,
What screen is that?
And how do you find it?
At present I have a TT screen with an MRA screen extender.
This set-up moves the wind blast to the top of the helmet and reduces windnoise, but I'm getting quite a bit of buffeting.
Anybody tried the Calci screen?

It's the Eagle screen. The animated gif below shows the standard F650GS screen, the BMW High Touring screen and the Eagle.

Bearing in mind I have the standard seat (not lowered) and normally have an Airhawk saddle fitted, the Eagle could still do with being a bit taller. At some stage I'd like to borrow a TT extender to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the pic Tim, to be honest, it doesn't look as if those handguards provide that much protection from the weather, but from reading your posts, I have to assume they serve you well!! :)

Cheers mate

EDIT: Maybe its true what they say... Size doesn't really matter?!?!?!? :D

wood works I have just fitted a throttlemeister and BMW 1200 adventure handguards great combination

take 3 photos. one photo per layer and exported as an animated GIF. ta da :thumb2

can do it in most packages... adobe fireworks, paintshop pro, Photoshop. etc

jon, you really are the midnight prowler on here, aren't you? i don't think i've ever seen a post earlier than midnight! :nenau
