► Hand Guards, handlebars, risers and levers

I didn't see the purpose of having the metal bar in the hand guards, even off road, and was put off by all the problems people were experiencing with vibration.

So I went for the handguards used on the 1200GS/GSA which are cheaper and offer better weather protection. I currently have handlebar muffs fitted over the top to keep the pinkies nice and warm.

Tim

How much do the guards for the 1200GS/GSA cost? Does anyone have a URL of a recommended website where I can get a set, I've Googled them, but I can't seem to find any... or maybe I can't see the woods for the trees :augie

Cheers

Go see your local dealer jason, cos all be same price but no postage

No brainer really :thumb

I was down their last week and with all respect to them, they seemed more interested in flogging me a set specifically for my 650. I asked them about the 1200 ones, but they kept telling me about the ones for my bike...

I'll pay them another visit and pretend that I've actually got a 1200 :D

Anyone else fitted the 1200 handguards to their 650? Did you have any trouble with the cable routing on the left hand side?

F800GS Heated Grips retro fit

The cost of retro fitting the heated grips at the dealer isn't down to the programming of the canbus, it's the parts themselves that are very pricey.

Due to the nature of the design of the original hand grips, it's far from a simple job to fit Oxford heated grips. The best / easiest aftermarket type to fit are Symtecs.

I've fitted them to my Megamoto, there is an accessory plug (ignition switched for the GPS etc) I believe it's under the small panel by the ignition switch on the 800, and this saves the need for them to be wired to the battery with the potential for a flat battery.

Here's a couple of links that should explain it.

The following tow links should

Spot on JB just fitted Symtec heated grips from Winding Roads to my F800GS price is still as in your original thread just spliced in to the accesory socket for power so they turn off with ignition and with a bit of care you don't really notice the wiring but do make sure you get 2 throttle side 1150GS grips as the clutch side grip is too small to go over the plastic sleeve and heating element
So the £260 saved from BMW retro fit will buy either more bling or go towards Guiness vouchers on my next weekends away!:beer::beer:

Finnaly chose and fitted my handguards... I went for the 1200GS gaurds for my 650... Easy to fit, but I found some trouble aligning the left hand side due to cable positioning. No big deal though, I got to take her out today for a "test drive" and the difference they've made is amazing! :D

Also fitted a thottle rocker, and that is bleeding brilliant... I have to wonder how I've ridden a bike for so long without one! For those who are having trouble with the cancelling of the indicators, I can seriously recommend one coz it allows you to rotate the throttle in a 'sensible' manner while hitting the cancel switch without shooting out of the junctions/roundabouts :augie

Word to the wise - vibration is definitely worse when you've fitted BMW handguards!

This entails removing the heavy bar ends and replacing them with the much lighter handguard ends.
The lead/sand trick sounds good but I'd like to know if there is a product or a way of refixing the handlebar ends to overcome the hand guard issue??

BMW/TT need to sort this out, the second i rode the beema after fitting the BMW handgaurds the vibration was noticable enough i had to pull over. it was driving me insane!, so back to the workshop and onto the lathe we managed to mill out the original bar end weights to suit the hand gaurds. you can have 3 1/2 of BMW's alloy light weight useless weights to one of the original solid steel bar end weight.

once this was all done refitted and now its time for a test run. i dont like the idea of putting lead into my bars, well not yet anyways.:D

Piccies here of the Touratech handguards. Well made, fit great, far far better by far than the BMW one's methinks

Fit nicely with the Micky brake master cylinder reservoir re-location mod :thumb

Hi Micky,
where did you get this brake cover? did you make it or is it an off the shelf item?

thank you . :D

I replaced the silly wibbly wobbly brake master cylinder reservoir with one off a standard 1200GS. The brake cover is a standard Wunderlich part for the 1200GS :thumb

Appreciate some pics of the final assembly :thumb2

ill post some results shortly, i have a ride planned today to test out a few other chanes aswell.:D

Micky

It be interesting how that goes. I thought the big wobbly cylinder was to keep it from making air bubbles from vibration over ruff stuff?
Keep us updated if you be so kind.:thumb2

Done probably 15,000 miles with this mod. No problems to date Shag.
Didya ever see a Paris-Dakar bike with a master cylinder like that?

S'posed to be in case of accident methinks :augie

Have You ever seen bubbles going down in a liquid? That would be the only way bubbles would cause any problem.

I changed the cylinder first thing I got the bike and has never had a problem with it. And I do a lot of dirt and gravel.

I agree woth Micky, this iwas just a quick last minute decision on BMW's Team, surely they could have changed this. i can tell you this, since i had done the bar end weight modification it has improved not only the vibrations throught my hands but i dont reckon the front brake reservior is wobbling as much either.

oh and another thing, i can see again :D they just sit way too high and i am short. :(

I've done the mod too, right on the first service, and no problems since. About 10000 Km on it.

Has anyone else noticed that the F800S and ST both have the same brake cylinder reservoir and master cylinder as the GS? Using a carry-over design is sound financial move in my mind. the primary difference is the flexibility that's built into the GS version.

The question then becomes: Why did the S and ST need a design where the reservoir is not attached to the cylinder?

i did and see your point.

now i have sorted out my bar weights it has half a chance. for those of you who have the BMW handgaurds and do this mod you (might) experience this apparent bubbling etc..

cheers

Micky,

What levers are you using on your machine, they look very good and loads of adjustment?

Thanks andy
