► Lights, indicators, electrics and alarm

They look great value compared to the TT aux lights. Aux lights will give you some more light on the road but you should primarily regard them as a presence/safety thing.

It's not a good idea to have aux HIDs, if you want the improved lighting it's best to acheive that by changing the dip (and possibly main beam) to HID through Les Wassall.

Thanks Tim. Yes, my thinking was more for daytime visibility rather than night time light. I think I would be fitting them with one of the auto switches that run off the indicator cancel button - do you have any experience of using/fitting these? A

I'm with Tim on this one. I bought the TT HID light and run them during the day. For some reason I've never been able to aim them exacty center - I've tried every which way. If I was to do it again I'd buy the Les Wassall dip light. I also wired a good looking switch that turns on/off with with the bike. I just switch it off at night. Posted pictures and links to the switch somewhere on this site.

I bought a set of 'cheap' HIDs and expected them to set off all the Canbus bells and whistles...

Not a peep, nary a whisper of complaint from the OBC ... without doubt the best £45.00 I've spent on the bike so far - and that was for 2 of everything...!

I already have Les Wassall's fabulous HID50 dip/main conversion on my F650GS and now I want to mount auxiliary lights. These will primarily be for presence so that oncoming trucks in Africa and elsewhere understand that I'm NOT a moped.

So I'm looking for how to mount them at roughly the same height or slightly lower than the headlight. I briefly considered mounting on the engine bars but that's too low.

The other consideration is that ordinary bulbs will now look distinctly yellow compared to the pure white of the HIDs. So perhaps a bulb with a blue/white effect could be used, or blue LED lights though I'm concerned about the legality.

Ideas welcome!

Tim

I've just started looking at option for my 650 as well (same as yours! your reviews etc were a big help in choosing, thanks!!:thumb2)

There is a philips conversion bulb that is apparently 80% brighter and a much purer light than normal bulbs, giving a 'blue' effect which I've ordered, so will let you know how that seems when I get it. Pretty sure the Halfords jobs in your link are almost certainly illegal though.. my brother ran some and was pulled and warned almost every time he was out..

'scuse my ignorance, but why not a good idea to have aux HID's?.. just curious?

oh and hello all on the 650/800 thread! New to the forum and collecting my '08 Iceberg silver F650GS today!! :)

The setup I have on my 1200GSA is
- twin aux non-HIDs for presence
- twin aux HIDs for additional lighting

For maximum presence the aux lights need to be pointed into the vision area of cage drivers, and if you were using HIDs they would be blinded.

I do more mileage abroad than in the UK and the reason for using aux HIDs for additional lighting is that they are adjustable (which the dip/main beams are not) for driving on the right or left side of the road.

I've installed them so that one of the HIDs is fired from the dip beam (but switchable) so I can have it on or not. This HID is pointed into the distant gutter. The other HID comes on automatically with the main beam and is pointed into the distant middle of the road.

Touratech's setup where they have a pair of lights, one non-HID, the other HID, is designed for the same reasons as I've given. The non-HID should be on all the time, the HID fired from the main beam.

Tim

Have a pair of Mr Wassall's HID's waiting to be fitted to the 800 GS, PIAA 510's for night time driving illumination and for the first time ever a pair of PIAA DENO series LED Daytime driving lights.

Designed specifically for additional visability during the day the DEno's should eliminate the issues Tim mentions with blinding on coming drivers and at the same time the power usage being LEDs is tiny, so much so they don't even need a rely but can be simply connected into the lighting circuit.:thumb

Just, finally, put the finishing touches to aux. light brackets made specifically for the Touratech fog/hid type of lights :thumb

As neat as you'll get ... the biz :thumb

I hope to be able to get the brackets lazer cut (took me a week to develop) and may be able to be in a position to supply ... depends on costing

Will keep you posted :thumb

Will only fit the 800GS, not the 650, because of the indicators being in the way... sorry :pullface

Excellent! Ingenious.

A question: I notice you've got windscreen and bracket that's not stock. It might be OEM, i'm not sure, but that's not part of the question. Here it is: Do you think this bracket will work with the stock windscreen which uses a plastic fitting for your rear-most mounting point?

Hi Flaggers ... I guess so, for the mount locates at the same place on the fairing side panel.

However, although the headlight mount is slotted, the distance from the center of the headlight mount to the rear screen mount is 90mm and the distance from the fairing mount (below the headlight mounting) to the rear mounting (screen) is again 90mm

Hope this helps...

Here's a new angle on the lights.

I bought some LED lights from ebay.

Sprayed them black...

and fitted them on Friday... Excuse the video and music. It's a new camcorder and I'm still tinkering with it and the editing software. :augie

They appear to be pointing upwards and outwards, or is that your camera? How are they fitted to the bike?

Tim

You're correct Tim. I see this as somewhat of an advantage as they point in the direction of people emerging from junctions. :)

I had trouble trying to figure out how I would attach them. Then I came up with the idea of slipping black heat shrink over the jubilee clips I had reserved for the radiator top hose. It's a bit heath Robinson but I think it works.

Micky,
what HID's are you using? are they actual TT?

cheers

Originally from Touratech. One is long range HID the other is normal 55w fog light with low very flat beam ... ideal for lighting up the side of the road without blinding anyone

Just in case anyone's remotely interested...

Here are a couple of pics of my recent 50W HID conversion ...

This is the dip beam ballast that came with its own handy mounting frame (I'm hoping it will last!). It's a 'cheap' Chinese set, but it does what it says on the tin, so I'm happy...

Keep your eyes peeled for the main beam fitment which is the faster slimlime ballast - I'll post some pics of the other side tomorrow...

Installation was a piece of cake really, as I said before I was worried that the OBC wouldn't like it much, but nothing reported so far. What I will have to do though is check the alignment of the lamp itself because the HID does a very good job of highlighting the deficiencies of the headlamp. My chip-pan basket TT headlamp protector doesn't help much either...
