Fitted a set of Les Wassall's HIDs to my 800, so not planning to fit the Philips bulbs in that.:augie

Freeloader, just had my set delivered and have been wondering where to put the ballasts. Have you any tips, or even better, pics on where you put them? Loads of info around on fitting for the R1200 GS, but not much for the F800 GS yet.
Cheers,
pete.

Hi Pete, I'll try and post some hints later today - just about to be busy for several hours.:D

Standard lights = bright
Extreme Bulbs = 80% brighter
HID's = 100% or more depending on make - and longer lasting

If you have the budget and want the ultimate, go for HID.

I got my Extremes off fleaBay for £25 a pair - a bargain deal I can't find for less than £30 now. :nenau

Extremes still on Halfords' website on a BOGOF offer.

H4s are £18.99, H7s are £23.99. Although they say "up to 90% brighter", but that's a difficult claim to check without specialist equipment.:D:D

Took a couple of shots with my phone last night. Not the best quality, and only of the RHS, but LHS is virtually a mirror image. Was it Les you bought the kit from? If so he might be able to send you something a bit more helpful.

Morning zzzzz.
It's the Les kit but bought through Adventure spec (presume it is anyway, the material references hid50.com).
Pics are good, but still can't work out where on the bike it is...?

Well, the second pic is just the first one from a slightly different position, and that's the coolant header tank on the right of the second pic. Les can supply pics of the positioning shown without the panels on, which helped me. Don't know what I've done with the ones he sent me though...:nenau

Been following this thread (and chipping in my 2 penn'orth) and this has led me have a good look over the hid50.com web site.

Lots of info - the installation section look pretty detailed and clear.

Also, the comparison of lumens (lm = measurement of light output) clarifies my earlier post;

1250 - 1400 lm : 55 watt standard H7 halogen bulb
1500 - 1650 lm : 55 watt performance H7 halogen bulb (Philips 50+, PIAA 55=110 etc)
3000 - 3200 lm : 35 watt HID conversion
4600 - 5300 lm : 50 watt HID conversion

Rough maths taking the mid-range points shows;

Performance H7 is 25% brighter than standard H7
35 watt HID are 130% brighter than standard H7 and 100% brighter than performance H7's
50 watt HID are 280% brighter than standard H7 and 150% brighter than performance H7's

I'm now sold. hid50 kit ordered. :D

I was amazed to stumble onto Phillips X-treme H7 bulbs for sale in the USA. Usually the high output/performance bulbs found in europe are not available in the USA, or the name is reused, but the performance is significantly lower. Anyone in North America try these yet? They were $US 50.

I bought a pair and both only lasted ~200 hours. So I complained to Plilips and they sent me another pair. which lasted 200 hours.

So I bought a HID kit from Les as it works out cheaper in the long run.

I had a similar experience with PIAA....high performance bulbs = reduced life. 200 hrs is probably more than the PIAAs lasted.

after a hid50.com conversion... nuff said

To quote a line from John Boormans Excalibur...

The right ballast is secured between the frame and the fairing ahead of the header tank, attached to the frame by cable ties. The left ballast is in a "mirror image" position, IYSWIM. The other parts of the HiD harness sort of just fit where there's space for them.

Not a great description, but PM me with your email addy if you need more help.:D

Disappointed

My LED indicators are on and working.

As I'd hoped they look super cool.

However they work perfectly without the £27 canbus update that Pidcocks told me I'd need. I've double checked using a GS911 and there are no fault messages anywhere on the computer.

The LED indicators also do not require the additional fitting kit that Picocks told me I'd need and sold me for an additional £20.
The indicators are supplied with the same connectors as the standard ones.

All you need to fit these are 4 cable ties to replace the ones you cut off.

The fitting kit will be going back to Pidcocks for a refund and I think I'll be using Rainbows in future.

Light Bars

Hi i want to mount a set of spotlights on my new bike any suggestions, who makes a mounting bracket for them
Thanks

wow, those look the business. keep us posted...

yeah they do! :beerjug: The angles are sympathetic to the 800's styling. If they came in black I'd be very happy.

I wonder if the lights above the led's are halogen? to be honest I'd be happy with just the LED's

that said my little home made strobe project is progressing nicely... pictures will follow :augie
