► Lights, indicators, electrics and alarm

I've fitted the Phillips X-Treme bulbs, brighter that the tallow candle that comes as standard, but not as powerful as the full-on Hids.

My headlight went the same way with HID's fitted, reflector went black, lens went milky, but that could be condesation or whatever because the unit is no longer sealed because of the wires in to the back for the HID's.

So reverted to standard bulbs... but with HID aux headlight and 55w fog to assist dip beam. Works a treat no problems and looks better in my book.

You can disconnect your battery for a short period and not upset the service indicator.I t tells you how long in your manual ( Mines at Work) I think from memory its 2 mins but check the manual.

Won't be able to ride F800GS for a while due to bad finger so wondering if battery will be discharged after a few months stood still. I have an Optimate charger, but if I disconnect the battery to charge, I guess it'll upset the instrument /service indicator thingy.
PS there's isn't an alarm draining the battery and its kept in a garage so hopefully the battery should stay relatively OK. Its a Apr '08 bike

Ordered a set of these from Les earlier this week, once installed will let you all know how i get on. Hmmmm............

Well, I reckon it took about 5500 miles of HID use for my reflectors to get into the state they're in now... :D

word of warning: 50W HID's will nuke your 800's headlight. There was a few posts on here recently about it, and mine has since deteriorated very badly. I think it's electron discharge and oxygen reacting, but am not sure. Either way, it ain't pretty. I wonder if the 35's wouldn't be so toxic to the silver reflective film lining the headlight?

The burning will spread and the smoke generated will cloud up your lens...

I noticed the same problem when I disassembled the HID from my 2008 F650GS. It had done over 21000 miles, maybe 18000 with the 50w HID installed. The lens was clouded over so I stuck a rag through the bulb hole to try to clean it. Some success but then some of the shiny stuff came off the reflector...

I love the light of the 50w HID and need to do something with the new 2010 F650GS. Like Si, I'm wondering whether the 35w would have created the same problem.

Hiya ...
Whip the top cover off and hard-wire the optimate connector to the battery, that way you can by-pass the canbus ...

I'm up to 26,000 miles now. 20,000 of which have been with the HID's Like you I stuck a rag on the end of a screwdriver and wiggled it about inside the lens. Again like you I ended up taking more of the chrome effect off the lens. I too love the HID and even with the blackened lens it's still bloody bright :thumb2

I now have a can of Hycote "Chrome look" spray paint. The only downside is that it is not heat resistant. I had thought about silver engine paint but I fear that is moving into the realms of bodge job.

I'd be interested to see if I can get the glass off by cutting away the seal. As it is if you look closely the unit is not sealed. It has various vents which are represented as slits inside the lens and on the outside of the headlamp unit they have little rubber covers.

A matter of interest, anyone know how many pennies a new dipped/main light housing costs? Just in case...........

Cheers I assume you mean just put the 'permanent' connectors from the optimate on the battery terminals and then just plug it in when needed. Its what I did on my last CBR. I assume this means disconnecting the battery for a short time but should be OK ? I'm always wary of BMW things now after having JAP bikes for 25 years and not knowing the ins and outs of BMW!!

The process of adding a chrome effect to the lens is done by way of vacuum metalizing. Vacuum Metalizing is the process of evaporating metals (most commonly aluminum) inside a vacuum chamber which then bonds to the desired substrate to achieve a uniform metalized layer.

It's a large volume, automated process so any chances of me trying to re-coat my lens seem slim. I reckon I'll have to bite the bullet and get a new lens unit.

Does anyone know if the lens unit's differ on the continent? I'll be spending more time over there and wondered if the lenses were configured to deal with riding on the right hand side of the road?

Hi Jon,

Just called Bmw here... There is a difference between UK models and the one on the continent.
It will cost you 348 € for a new unit.
Continent refs 63127 697 751
For the UK market 63127 697 752

Be good

Hey thanks for that research Bernard :beerjug: very much appreciated.

On a slight aside I have found an Italian company that does aux lights not dissimilar to Touratech's and they are a fraction of the price.

My only gripe is that they are mounted almost parallel to the headlights which for me serves no purpose. I want a triangular configuration and so what Si Jonhston has achieved is far superior :thumb2

Everywherevirtually, thanks for this, might be handy in the near future!

Electricial question for the EE experts

With all this talk about amps, volts, draw, etc. on the F800GS, and how you may run your battery down if you use too many accessories I have a question for the collective electrical experts.

Keep in mind I'm a CPA (Chartered Accountant for the lads across the pond) so my question may come off rather simplistic.

I hooked up my Hella Micro DEs (2 X 55W) over the weekend along with my 35W HID from HID50.com (hooked up to the "high" beam (dip light), as well as my heated vest connection.

I have a Garmin 276C also wired which indicates the voltage coming to the GPS (I assume that's what it shows).

Should/could I be able to see the voltage drop every time I turn on an accessory (I know, I know I could do this myself, but I just thought of this, and I'm sitting in my office) until it drops below 12V? In other words, should I be able to tell when I've turned on too many accessories?

I'll try this on the way home (although I don't have my heated jacket with me).

The voltage shown on the GPS is typically 13.7V, how much draw would it take to start dropping the voltage?

On my old R1150GSADV I never worried about running too many accessories.

Talk to me...like you're speaking to a ten year old. :nenau

Maybe I should have said..."talk to me like I'm an educated 10 year old" :teacher

I'll try my experiment this evening while riding home. Start with nothing on but the bike, and then turn on the Hellas, and then the HID, and see what happens to the voltage on the GPS.

Report back tomorrow. :type
