I've fitted the Phillips X-Treme bulbs, brighter that the tallow candle that comes as standard, but not as powerful as the full-on Hids.

You can disconnect your battery for a short period and not upset the service indicator.I t tells you how long in your manual ( Mines at Work) I think from memory its 2 mins but check the manual.
The HIDs I fitted are 50W and 5000K, if anyone's interested.
Ordered a set of these from Les earlier this week, once installed will let you all know how i get on. Hmmmm............

word of warning: 50W HID's will nuke your 800's headlight. There was a few posts on here recently about it, and mine has since deteriorated very badly. I think it's electron discharge and oxygen reacting, but am not sure. Either way, it ain't pretty. I wonder if the 35's wouldn't be so toxic to the silver reflective film lining the headlight?
The burning will spread and the smoke generated will cloud up your lens...
Won't be able to ride F800GS for a while due to bad finger so wondering if battery will be discharged after a few months stood still. I have an Optimate charger, but if I disconnect the battery to charge, I guess it'll upset the instrument /service indicator thingy.
PS there's isn't an alarm draining the battery and its kept in a garage so hopefully the battery should stay relatively OK. Its a Apr '08 bike
I noticed the same problem when I disassembled the HID from my 2008 F650GS. It had done over 21000 miles, maybe 18000 with the 50w HID installed. The lens was clouded over so I stuck a rag through the bulb hole to try to clean it. Some success but then some of the shiny stuff came off the reflector...
I love the light of the 50w HID and need to do something with the new 2010 F650GS. Like Si, I'm wondering whether the 35w would have created the same problem.

A matter of interest, anyone know how many pennies a new dipped/main light housing costs? Just in case...........
Cheers I assume you mean just put the 'permanent' connectors from the optimate on the battery terminals and then just plug it in when needed. Its what I did on my last CBR. I assume this means disconnecting the battery for a short time but should be OK ? I'm always wary of BMW things now after having JAP bikes for 25 years and not knowing the ins and outs of BMW!!Hiya ...
Whip the top cover off and hard-wire the optimate connector to the battery, that way you can by-pass the canbus ...

Does anyone know if the lens unit's differ on the continent? I'll be spending more time over there and wondered if the lenses were configured to deal with riding on the right hand side of the road?

Hi Jon,
Just called Bmw here... There is a difference between UK models and the one on the continent.
It will cost you 348 € for a new unit.
Continent refs 63127 697 751
For the UK market 63127 697 752

very much appreciated.
Hey thanks for that research Bernardvery much appreciated.
On a slight aside I have found an Italian company that does aux lights not dissimilar to Touratech's and they are a fraction of the price.

My only gripe is that they are mounted almost parallel to the headlights which for me serves no purpose. I want a triangular configuration and so what Si Jonhston has achieved is far superior![]()
Everywherevirtually, thanks for this, might be handy in the near future!

With all this talk about ................ etc
Talk to me...like you're speaking to a ten year old.![]()
