Chris, that's brilliant! Thanks. :thumb2

This is the full tool kit that I take on the 1200GSA, most of which applies to the F650/800GS. I hasten to add I don't take everything, all of the time!

The top photo shows things packed away. I used transparent plastic pencil cases (WH Smith etc) which come in various sizes. The most important items are top right, and the torx set includes T40, T50 and T55. The F650/800 needs a T45 which is in the BMW tool roll (top left).

The bit part of the ABUS lock is stored on the 1200GSA, so I need to work out somewhere to store this on the F650. I'm intending to mount one or two tool tubes to house tools and first aid kit.

Spare bulbs are a legal requirement in some countries.

The Slime 12v pump is only taken when I anticipated possibly having to lower tyre pressures, otherwise I rely on the BMW tubeless tyre repair with its CO2 cannisters.

The paper documents are technical biking translations in French, German and Spanish.

In building a tool kit the sensible thing to do is to keep separate ANY tool that you have used to work on the bike. This pile then becomes the tool kit you take.

I carry two first aid kits on a trip, one for sickness things and one for accidents which I always keep on the bike. As well as what you might expect the 'accident' kit includes things like optrex, anti-histamine, gaffer tape and a cigarette lighter.

Thanks for the advice, Tim. Love the idea of pencil cases! :thumb2

F800GS Torx Bit Set....?

Can anyone give me an idea of the complete set of torx bit sizes I need for a GS? I've seen loads of threads stating sizes for different parts but not a single definative list anywhere. I'm not that keen on buying/carrying a full set unless I have to and I dont have a bike to check stuff on at the moment.

Ta,

I assume that by the time you need to worry about carrying them you will have the bike to check them yourself :nenau

Definately need a T50, which is pretty large for a torx key and not all that common. This set won't break the bank. Don't think you'll find the required items for less.

You'll also need Torx sockets though - don't know what size, they're used on the pillion handles and a couple of other places.

I'm on the look out for a cheap or second hand socket set that I can suppliment with a set or Torx sockets, if anyone sees anything, let me know. Will have a gander round that site Twisticles - looks good.

Chris

Can't find the button to PM you.

I've got a spare set (T10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 40, 45 & 50 - everything I think you need for the GS although I think I read somewhere you also need the T55 but I haven't had the need) laying around still in the packaging. Yours for the postage. PM me if you want them.

You'll need ...

... a T55 for the Bar end weights on the F650/800 (and the '08 1200GSA) and it's not one that you find in most sets :blast

Halfrauds stuff in 3/8" seems to work well (with the above exception), and they do the sockets too :thumb

Wildman - bit cheeky I know, but if wonky doesn't want you spare set...;)

I can collect :thumb

Maintenance schedule for the 800

Hi
Could someone be so kind as to post the 800's maintenance (including break in) schedule?

Thanks

Running in check @ 600 miles
Next service at 6000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes soonest.

The OBC will remind you when its due :p

tanks

I'm trying to make some arrangements/plans around picking up the bike (1500 km from here) and was curious about the maintenance scedule, especially the run-in portion.

torx set and spanners in Lidl

The quality might not be on a par with snap-on tools, but they look fine for general use.

The £9.99 torx rachet set has two of each of the following (one set 30mm long, the other 75mm long): T20, T25, T30, T40, T45, T50, T55, T60 plus the rachet, 13 other bits and two adapters.

The 6.99 spanner set has 19 spanners from 6mm up to the 24mm spanner needed for the rear axle lock nut (chain adjustment).

Would you rely on them in a remote place Tim?

2nd toolbox reserves maybe :)
