► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

Just back from the Horizons meet in Derbyshire and am extremely pleased with the K60's. No probs on motorway fully loaded at 70+ speeds and quieter than TKC's. Easily as good as the original Battlewings on dry lanes blasting around the peaks and obviously much better on a couple of green lanes we tried, although there was very little in the way of mud. Managed to get a soaking up in Dovedale and they performed fine again, certainly better IMHO than TKC's. So far so good.

ahh, richie the legend pops up again! senior gibson tells me good things. maybe meet you soon enough. thanks for the advice fella.

Some people don't like Anakees. Myself I thought they were brilliant and gave quicker steering than the Tourance.

Rode transalp yesterday with those Heidaneu tyres, no problems whatsoever and cheap as chips. Maybe a good compromise between TKC and the more road biased Anakee/Tourance...

no, trail-attacks aren't available in the 800 size...according to my stockist, who knows more than anyone else in the world...about everything!!! (Tim at Coleraine Tyre Centre). :aidan

Another tyre to throw into the mix.

Can you fit the conti trail attack to the 800gs with the inertubes?

Realy fancy them but only 1200 guys seem to use them

No mention of them here- http://f800riders.org/HoW/showentry.php?e=26

I had Anakee's tires on my 1996 Funduro 650 very pleased with them.
A lot better off road (wet and muddy) than the Battle Wings. (which is not hard to do I guess)

My 800 Gs now have Battle Wing installed, on tarmac they are a lot better than the Anakkee's (which create some vibration at 120 Km/hour) but I wouldn't feel so confident on muddy & wet with the B.W.

Can't have the best of both world hey
:beerjug:

Free Tyres!

I have a pair of Battlewings that have done about 500 miles, they've been sitting by the side of my shed in plastic bags for a year. They're the tyres that came with the bike & I fitted TKC's after a couple of months. Anyway I thought I'd keep them 'just in case', but now i've gone knobbly for a year I can't see me going back....

So the long & short of it is, if anyone would like them then drop me a pm & we'll arrange a pick up time. I live in Hertford Herts BTW.

shag, they certainly didn't do tubeless trail-attacks when the 8 came out. so you're saying that it's possible to get tubed versions of them now?

Hey Rich,

Thanks for pointing that out...at the time of authoring, there was no trailattack in 800GS sizes. I've updated that HoW.

Looks like conti have updated their website with recommended pressures for the TKC80:

Front: 2.5bar/36psi
Rear: 2.5bar/35 psi

Which puts the front at the top of end of BMW recommended pressure range for stock tyres, and the rear at the lower end.

Go figure.

i'd be interested in hearing how you get on with the anakees. i fitted another set of tkc's last week and have since done around 1000 miles, and won't be able to hold out as they're already getting low. i hate tourances even though they last for an age, so anakees or the heidenau's might be next on the list.

why don't you give Trailwings a go. They look bloody good but I don't know about mileage expectations.

I'm running at 32/35 on TKC80's. I reckon that I'll get no more than 2500 miles out of the rear. The front looks relatively unmarked.

It's the first set I've fitted, so I don't know if the handling is good or bad at these pressures. It seems comparable with the Battlewings in the dry. Wet I couldn't tell you, I'm a not a happy bunny at higher speeds in bends when it's raining anyway.

As a side issue, I've worn off the moulding 'hairs' on the rear tyre edges through cornering - yet the front tyre remains positively hirsute by comparison. All the moulding hairs are still there.

I'd always assumed that both tyres would go over to the same angle - thereby wearing out the edges at the same time. Obviously not.

Or is the front tyre just a different profile?:nenau

Try not wheelying it everywhere. :augie

Tyre pressures will always be a compromise... Personally the last time I knew I was going to be doing a long mix of tarmac and trail, I took a small 12v compressor with me. It only takes a few minutes to inflate or deflate the tyres to suit conditions, and if you've had a hard time on the bike the time taken to do this can actually be a welcome break...

I have 'Wings on the bike at the moment and am lazy so they are about mid 20s at the moment, I've got into the habit of feeling my tyres when I get off the bike and they've never felt anything but warm even after a long fastish road ride.

TKCs are a grown up enduro tyre and as such need a certain amount of deformation to work properly on the rough stuff... 15-20psi was all I needed on a fully loaded 950 Adv 'S' through Maroc a couple of years ago... worked for me and not one puncture in 3000km, however YMMV ...

Its funny, I'd been running at 26/32 on TKC80s, and really liking it. Lots of confidence.

I topped up to 32/36 on the weekend, and on a long run last night the bike was noticeably lighter, which I guess means faster turning, but I couldn't seem to hold a smooth line in any bends.

I don't know, the more I lean the less I know, I guess :nenau
