► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

my experiance of tkc80

now then

am looking at getting some tyres for greenlaning and road riding, reckon i'll be doing a fair bit of greenlaning but will also be going out with missus on the back still.

will the tkc80's do me justice??

ta
the tkc is a great tyre for 50/50 tarmac and gravel, took 3 bikes fitted with them to the alps and road all the way in 25+ temps. what i will say is that once they start heating up the tread starts to crack and on the smaller tyre , blocks started to fly.
ktm 950 with 150 profile= great wear
ktm 640 with 140 profile= finished after 2500km
Xr 650 with 120 profile= flung rubber like a claymore mine
just about to shoe my gs800 with a set of karoo t.
lets see how they do. will keep you posted.
compared to my enduro riding days when i could change tyres every week i think what the hell as long as your having fun.if you want tryes to last 5000milesplus, stick to the roadbased ones.

Replacement tyres for 800GS

Hi,
my original Bridgestones are coming up for replacement soon

want to try a set of tourances, but local type shop is stating only availble as H rated not V as per the bridgestones.

Any one had this problem?

Thanks

Tim

Tyre help for 800GS please?

Hi,

having a few problems with replacement tyres

Called Pro tyre and they are struggling to offer me metzler tourance or Michelin Anakees for tubed use as a V rating.
They were going to check and call me back.

Can anyone confirm what they have used as replacements and if they were V rated

Thanks

Tim :)

Could I question you as to why you would require V rated tyres on an F800GS.

"H" rated go up to 130mph/210kph which I believe is well in excess of the top speed of an 800GS .... I think

Sometimes the rating is more to do with strength of sidewalls and therefore corning stability - so an OEM manufacturer may recommend a higher rating than the speed statistics suggest is needed.

I have fitted H rated tubeless Tourance with to my 800GS it handle perfectly much better than original Battlewings
On the Metzeler website it states that it is OK to fit Metzeler tubeless tyres with tubes.
Michelin are now doing the correct rating tyres anakee but there were non in the country when i last checked

Tyre update

Hi,
had Metzler tourance's fitted yesterday T/L but are fine for use with tubes. Just put 60 miles on them enjoying some late sunshine down in the west country. The rear is a V rated front H, I guess if I want to go over 130mph then I can only do it on the rear wheel:augie

The original battle wings lasted just over 6,000 milles, front was lower than rear. rear was just starting to square off.

Be careful riding fast twisty roads with Heidenaus, I've followed a good rider who was using them and they caused him to run wide on several occasions.
This type, Tim?

I hope they'll be ok for Uralmix.

If the rubber are softer, and you let some air out I guess you get more flexibility sideways, like jelly? :nenau

Anyway, this must be better then hard summer rubber. And studds help! :thumb2

Hmm..
Do you know how long these spikes are?
I asked a couple of local garages to put spikes in a Heidenau front tire for me but they all said the thread was not deep enough for the spikes they have.
I am now waiting for a TKC80 to use in combination with the Trelleborg rear tire. This is by the way for my other BM, 19 inc front rim.

I just called Høland Gummiservice AS here in Norway, and the father told me his son Rune did it. Rune was not in, but the father told me about typical studds for cars:
Make a hole 12mm deep, use glue and an special airpowered ''gun'' to put the studds in. The studds are 13mm long, and only 1mm are left for us to get a grip on the ice.
He assumed the son Rune used typical studds for cars in my tire - and it look like it for me too. They look very much like those I have in the tires for my car.

I know if you want longer studds you need to make deeper holes, and a different size of the airpowered ''gun''.

Some years ago a typical studd for cars was longer. I know many riders and drivers want the old type, but that is not legal for cars anymore. (On the road, in Norway.)

For cars you can only have these short (1mm) studd, and not as many as you want pr.tire.
But for motorbikes you can have as many as you like!
I'm 99% sure you can have the long type studd too, if you like, and if it is possible for your tire. But those who ride a lot in the winter keep telling me the short type are the best if you ride in all conditions; salt, wet or dry tarmac, icy tarmac, snowy roads.

It is a compromise; long studds and narrow tire = best in snow.
No studds and new, soft rubber are best on salt, wet or dry tarmac.

Cleaning the rubber help more then most people think!
And the softer winter type of rubber help a lot!

In winter I'm just happy to get up a hill, and I do not ride fast.
-But I'm having a really good time! This is much more fun the my car!

:) Liv.

Thanks a lot Liv:beerjug:
I ride through winter as well, but since I sold my DRZ I have been having some trouble finding a decent "Snow boots".

karoo t

Ok guys and girls. i have changed so many tyres on my enduro bikes and normally turn one roung in 20 mins(18")
Just had a set of karoo t,s delivered and i have never come across a tyre that is such a barstool to get on the rim, then needed 70psi to seat it, (with lots of lube)
has anyone else come across the same problem? They are tubeless but metzeler state they can be used with a tube. the battlewings more or less fell off.
must admit that it has transformed the look of the bike. time to go and get her dirty:nenau

It's going to be a cold winter

It was already snowing in Lowland Austria yesterday. I remember Does Wiedmann of "Alaska Deel" putting studds in her tyres at the beginning of this year for the trip north to Arctic circle. I've posted the vid below.

They put fire hose in between the inner tube and tyre as the studs were going in too deep.

Winter tyres

Has anyone any thoughts on a decent winter tyre for the 800,last year i did about two weeks in the snow with battleaxes on not the best. Before anyone says we should not ride in the snow i am only home six months a year so ride it when ever i can.It will be mostly road riding and will only be on for the winter.
So please rack your brains and let me know,i was thinking of the tcks??

Hi Andy

I have just replaced my original Battlewing with Metzler Tourance's , they look more off road orientated than the ones. I am sure they would be better in the snow but would not suggest they would be suitable for serious off road fun.

I've been thinking of trying the Heidenau k60 M+S

Out of stock at mo tho. The K60 has has some decent reviews though

They are a good tyre and the M&S versions are specifically made for winter ... M&S stands for matsch und schnee --- slush and snow.

Thanks for the info, going to look at both the tourences and the K60,will let you know how they go.

Had the tourances on a1150Gs and loved them:thumb2-rode the bike through winter.

Had TCK's on a KLX 650 and thought they were great. Personaly Im going to change my tyres to either of these....maybe the TCK's come to think of it:rolleyes:

I have no experience of the Heidenau k60 although they do seem to be getting positive reports:)

continental TKC80 on the twins?

I’m going to go for The TKC80's on my F658GSA I was wondering if anyone could give me any feedback having personally fitted them on your 650 or 800 GSA. Ide like to hear your opinion?

My original battle wings are at 8600 miles with a little life in them but looking to change soon! I do realise that the TKC80's won’t last that long (should last to the NEC Bike show next month do the tyre guys have a stand?))

Also can anyone recommend where to obtain them online!

Dean
