► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

Well I would stick with them until they start getting ropey.

But in reality, when I change tyres I have a knack for getting "snake bites" so often end up replacing them when I change tyres (sometimes two or three times) :$

Cool, thanks for the feedback. :thumb2

I will be reusing the OE's as long as possible then :thumb The spares can sit on the shelf till I stick a tyre lever in one of em! :blast :D

Seriously though, I can't understand the logic when someone says..

"I only ever repair a tube once then it's junk..."

If you fix the hole properly it's not going to leak and will be just as integral as the rest of the tube won't it?

When I had the tyres changed on my last bike I looked at the metal around the Valve, on one it was looking extremely rusty so I had the tube replaced.
Always check the condition around the valve as if the rest of the tube is fine this could fail.

Yeah ... you can mend it OK but with time and mileage and with fast road miles that repair can lift. I would treat it just the same as a tubeless repair, maybe see the tyre out and then ditch :thumb

Well that's just what I said my friend :thumb

I know Cannon from when he started in Chelmsford & i refuse to even visit them in Braintree.. Go SBW Motorcycles, they're in Hertford but well worth the trip.....I know they'll know TKCs & they prepare lots of overland bikes. Enjoy

So, there I am on the phone to Cannons sorting out my new 800 when I get to the subject of tyres, I say, can I have TKC80s please, and the "salesman" says, " I've never heard of them ". I almost fell off my chair. I questioned this with him many times, and he went as far as to say that he doesn't know anyone that rides any of their bikes off road. Hang on I say, you don't have a single customer that rides and 1150/1200 etc off road? No he said.

Now, tell me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't you expect a BMW enduro/dual sport bike salesman to have heard of these?! Jesus, even all the official promo pics have them on the bikes..

Losing my confidence with that lot fast, what with the dipsy girl that answered the phone yesterday, and now this.. Maybe I just need another cup of coffee.......... :spitfire

This is the thing right, I want TKCs fitted as it's a "for fun" bike laning etc and the odd trip to work. I said can I have them fitted before delivery as thats the reason I'm buying it, he just had no idea, and said if we stock them we might be able to swap them for you but as yet I've no idea.
The bloody promo pics show them on the bikes ffs.

OK, then we got onto hand guards, he also had no idea, and all he could say was " theyre not shown on the spec sheet " I know that already I said, but it said the same with the 1200 and that came with them fitted. Pass he said.

Confidence = low

I dunno. :nenau

You live in Thetford and your buying your bike in Braintree, Essex??
Go to Lind in Norwich - I've found them to be excellent in every respect.

Well I am sure we all have different experiences with dealers but I bought an ex BMW employee f800s from Lind, when it came to trade in time for a f800gs I went to Balderstons in Peterborough, I will say no more!

Any advice on the current best road tyre for the 800? I'm doing pure commuting in all weathers right now, so want the best thing for wet roads.

Leaning towards the Conti Trail Attack...

Had Conti Trail Attacks on the 1150 GS I took to Croatia. Was complimented on my riding in the rain i.e. mad *ucker. I found them to be great tires and I've just bought a set from Busters for just under £160 including carriage. They'll go on the 1200GSA after I've worn out the TKCs in Morocco.

Big vote for the Conti Trail Attacks from me:

"The Conti Trail Attacks are an incredible tyre. The pattern doesn't suggest much use on trail, and I didn't take on any gravel roads during this outing. But on the pavement, there was almost no difference between the dry roads and roads with 2" of standing water, I am very very impressed with these tyres. I am sure better bikers than me will easily scrape not only the pegs but probably the engine casing too with these tyres on."

Ride report first time I used them here.

Conti Trail Attack

Just back from 2 hour blast round the Peak District had the Trail Attack fitted last week £180 fitted, spot on dealt with wet roads ,dry roads ,flooded roads ,debris strewn roads no prob much better than the battlewings.Seem to give much more confidence bike handles better, big vote for Trail Attacks.:)

++1 for Conti Trail Attacks, excellent grip in rain & shine
I need to replace mine after 8k..front down to 1.5 & rear down to 2mm.
NOG quoted me £308 (and that's with winter special 20% discount) needless to say I'm still looking for a deal?

NOG isn't really interested in doing tyre changes. Try any tyre dealer that does bike tyres, sadly many of them won't do ride-in-ride-out, only loose wheels.
Next stop is a motorcycle dealer, try Kings in Kidlington if you're near NOG/Oxford.

Have a 'day out', and go to Micheldever (just down the A34). I bought my front (Trail Attack) from them last year, and they were about £10 cheaper than anyone, about £87 fitted from memory. They do offer a 'ride in/ride out' service (costs a little more), however, I like to take the wheel out myself, so that I can have a good poke about whilst there.

Cheers for that V8legend
Last year I used Churchills, on the A5, at Potterspury,Towcester, paid about £80 for front & just over £100 for the rear, same as you I like take the loose wheels in, and you get to watch the guy do the job :)
I'll be giving them a call next week.

Joker
I'd had the bike into NOG for a service and thought I'd give them a chance to quote for the tyres, stupidly thinking that the 20% off might have brought their price down to a 'realistic level' :blast
