► Unexpected stalling issue

I was completely off the throttle for at least 10 seconds before the cutout. Was not coming down from a high speed run. No blipping. In 2nd gear coasting with clutch in from 15mph to about 5 mph. Was on the rear brake a little.

Stll stalling ??

"......I purchased my bike on 14/10/08 ......" Now that should be of concern as this issue was first noted very early this year (and my own accident occured in April) It really should have been sorted out by now, particularly as it seems to be fairly easy to resolve. I don't believe that (on this thread anyway) anybody has had this problem after the first service.

If this is still an issue, then BMW have got their fingers in their ears, their eyes closed and are singing "la la la la" very loudly.

Perhaps Motorcyle News would like to follow up their story of BMW quality suffering???

Think I'll drop them an email with a link to this post.....:spitfire

First stall report

I've got about 1600 mi on the F800GS. Decided to take advantage of the ever-so-rare RAIN in Southern California and ride to work. Unfortunately, it's on a 6-lane highway which in the morning is insanely crowded. On a dry day, it's pretty fast and most people are attentive. On a wet day, chaos. So of course, that's the day my bike (and I) decided to stall.

I'm in the middle lane, semi-truck to the left, big SUV in back of me, van in front and a couple of compact cars on the right. Steady rain; everybody going about 20-30mph. Van slows, so I close the throttle from 2nd gear and pull in the clutch. Bike stalls. I put on the emergency blinkers, raised my arm in the air to warn the SUV, pushed in the starter button and *it started.* WAHOO! Traffic had already begun accelerating, so the timing was good. ;)

This all sounds like the high speed-to-low speed transition/pull in clutch/close throttle issue that others have reported earlier, but dammit that's a VERY frequent scenario for me!

Also, I thought I noticed the engine running rougher than normal before the stall, but it definitely was running roughly after the stall and all the way to work another 20 mi down the highway. Could have been because I cracked the throttle whilst re-starting?

Have a service appt. scheduled for next Tuesday to have the shop work on the fuel sensor (can't stand filling up and seeing it read "empty" for the next 150mi!), and they will also be taking a look at this stalling issue. I took delivery in September, with 600mi service in early Oct., so I assumed that all was up to date.

Question: any reported stalling problems due to simply riding in the rain? Cheers, KLR

The only tme it ever happened to me, way back at the start of this thread, was in very heavy rain. In my case i was accelerating though and changing up, not down so rain and a gear change would be the common factors.

Hi klarue,

Ive not had any problems in the rain, and boy have we had some rain (in the uk) this year,

I'd be very interested to find out what the guys at BMW say when they take yours in for service

I will keep you all posted. In fact, I sent the URL to this thread, and one over on F800Riders to the Service Manager. He acknowledged receipt and reading it, and said he "noted the software update" in my appointment record.

As Moto said - if I can paraphrase - there should be NO issues in the rain!:rob

Cheers, KLR

unexpected stalling!!! oh and dodgy brakes!!!!!

This is my first posting on here as I HAVENT EVEN GOT MY BIKE YET!! I'm buying an ex offroad schools gs800f, for silly money and hoping that its not too beaten up by all the falling over it will have inevitably have done. I'm not even sure to what bikes it is relevant but VOSA website says there are recalls for fuel pressure sensors as well as faulty front brakes. I'f im allowed to post them here then these are the relevant pages.

Thats the one for the fuel pressure sensor, and here is the one for faulty front brake.....

Dont let anyone bluff you that these mods have been carried out, ask for proof positive. heres looking forward to the bike im getting not being beaten up to an extent where i want my money back, any advice gratefully accepted. (I'm trading in a Vstrom 1000 with all the goodies you could possibly want but not yet done the deal if you want it,lol

Meanwhile back on topic!
I rode 70 miles today to have the rear sprocket recall done and the engine remap done (which is supposed to cure the stalling issue) on the way to the dealer I had a stall, slowing down for a junction as they all seem to be, this was the first one for about 3000 miles, on the way home the remap seemed to have improved the low speed fuelling but as I turned into my road released the clutch in 2nd there was a "pop" and the engine was dead hence locking the back wheel on a wet road and nearly having me off. Spoke to dealer told to bring it back for a diagnostic check.

I managed to get mine to cut out this morning. However I was doing lots of totally unnecessary throttle blipping out of frustration at cars blocking a roundabout, trying to attract their attention, next time I will use the horn.

Serves me right but it seems this could be the cause as it's the first time it's cut out on me.

I don't think this is the cause. I've had the remap and it hasn't cut out since 5 months on. I blip the throttle a lot with no ill effects. :thumb2

I would suggest you get the remap.

There is also the chance that a bike can cut out through rider error. :augie

I'm with you on this one John.

I blip the throttle like it's going out of fashion, (ex motocross habits die hard), and I've never stalled mine once. Mines from the second batch of 800's which arrived in the UK in October so would have come with the remap preinstalled.

Bip, blipity-blip!

Hmm, mine should have the re-map, It was bought brand new 3 weeks ago!

I suppose it could be rider error but I was moving and had drive so I would say unlikely.

It goes in for its 600 mile service soon I will mention to the service guy to see if it's got the latest map.

Bip, blipity-blip!

Just sounds so good!

Hey guys - has anyone heard of an F800 "not" starting? I had this problem last month. Bike has 4800 miles on it and no other problems or hints of problems before this event. Here's what happened: stopped to refuel after about an hour 20 of non-stop riding between 45 and 70 MPH. Went inside to pay, the food smelled so good I sat down to eat. 45 minutes later when I geared up to go, the bike wouldn't fire. Had plenty of battery and turned over nicely, just wouldn't start. After trying to start it for two hours, I had it towed home, it was a Suday and no shops are open in Texas until Tuesday. so of course it starts up just fine when the tow arrives to carry it to the dealership. I called the dealer and they tell me to bring it in anyway so they can have a look - it's been there for a month and they are stumped, have no idea what the issue is. So - I'm asking if anyone has heard of an issue like this and if not, what is the typical next step for some type of action out of BMW or the dealership?

BTW - I love the bike, just want to ride it

Possibly ...

... a faulty ring antenna :nenau There was an issue on early 1200's with canbus electrics where the ring antenna was affected by the induction loop system fitted on petrol station forecourts. Not that I have any truck with such modernities as canbus systems, but it might give you somewhere to start ? Did you push it out of the gas-station to the recovery truck, only to find it would start ?

I've just received a letter informing me of my 9th recall... 2 of them were for faulty ring antennas. Might be that...

I sometimes wonder if Microsoft programmed and built this thing... onto SP9 it is.

Wrong thread

In any case this is not connected to the 'unexpected stalling issue.' Thus your problem will not reach those who may know the answer. Try again. ( How is it that 'your' man from Texas is SO much faster than the others in Superbikes? No, don't answer that on this thread either! )

Thanks Brian - I searched but could not find any other threads that were similar to this problem the stalling thread seemed to be the closest. As for the antenna ring fault, I've had that problem on a rented 12GS at midnight in the middle of Norway. Differnt symptoms I think - what I experienced in Norway was that the bike wouldn't power up to even try and start. My 800 will crank for days - just won't turn over. When the problem did occur at the gas station, I moved the bike to the far side of the lot and then fiddled with the side stand switch and kill switch while attempting to start the thing but no luck.
Well thanks guys - if anyone else has a thought please respond as I have a sinking feeling Gulf Coast BMW is dragging their feet due to lack of knowledgalble service technicians.

Regards,
Len

Possibly some answers here might help http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=459773

Yes. I recall a rider on the F800Riders forum from Indiana reporting this sort of issue. He said it happened suddenly and I think his clock said 3,000 mi. His dealer was convinced it was a problem with injection nozzles and replaced them. Apparently been fine ever since. Makes no sense to me (aren't there fuel filters on these bikes?!), but that's not a new experience! :)

Do the bikes run better on Super unleaded fuel ?
