Now this guys got patience:thumb2

there is also a large thread on Advrider

again i hope the link works
Thanks for the links.

What the guy might have tried was to pop open the tank cover and leave it unlatched so that the tank is open to the atmosphere when it was stalling on city streets. If stalling stops, it points to the tank venting system or possibly the fuel pump; if it continues to stall it would seem to point to the fuel pump or beyond.

I've wondered many times if there's a filter in the fuel line. Haven't found it in the repair DVD (probably not BMW's best effort in the way of documentation).

Persistant fault?

The worrying part of this problem is that it was first mentioned in this forum in March 2008. The clip from 'youtube' brought it all back to me!
If you can be bothered to go back to my letter (N° 10 on this thread) you will see that I was more or less convinced by the dealer that it was my fault, having become so used to the torque of the boxers I had been riding for 30 years. Anyway, the bike was badly damaged (my insurance company 'happily' paid out €2.500 for repairs and as this was my first claim after 60 years I did not lose my no clailms bonus.) and I informed the dealer that I woul not ride it again - he gave me a good deal on a new 1200GS (similar to the one I had been riding since 2004 that I had just part exchanged with him which he resold within the week.) and that was the end of my three day flirtation with the 800. Needless to say my new, now one year old 1200GS does not suffer from this sort (or any other sort) of problem.

Are there two issues here? The early stalling problem was solved on my bike by an ECU update done on recall. Are people now getting stalling issues on bikes that have had the ECU update?

I believe there are 2 current issues:

- stalling during hot weather
- stalling during heavy rain or water crossings

There have been 3 solutions to warm weather stalls that I've heard about: re-load the f/w, replace the fuel pump, and (in the US) occasionally there's been a problem with the tank venting system related to the charcoal canister, e.g. a kinked hose or a defective canister or some other component of the pollution-control system.

For wet-weather & water crossings, the issue seems to be that water gets sucked into the bottom of the canister which temporarily blocks the canister creating excessive vacuum. The fuel pump can't always overcome that vacuum. The wet-weather scenario is most commonly attributed to routing of the vent line from the bottom of the canister too low. The opening gets exposed to too much water during heavy rain, some of which is sucked into the bottom of the canister. One solution is to re-route the vent line a little higher. This still leaves the issue of water crossings where the vent line is submerged. The better solution is to add a T into the hose near the bottom of the canister and then add an additional line up under the seat where it will be above the water level during a crossing. Some have reported that water accumulates in the air box during a heavy down pour, but apparently BMW designed the air box and induction system to keep up with this sort of eventuality.

As an aside, I understand that there is a limited number of times that the f/w can be reloaded before the module which houses the memory must be replaced (14 times?). For most owners that's not an issue, but if a dealer tries to use re-loading f/w as a one-size-fits-all solution there could be an expensive part-change coming.

While there's a possibility that a f/w change may have solved your (former) F800GS's problem, there's also no certainty that the problem would not have persisted. It's a shame a company with the resources and reputation of BMW can't get this issue resolved. Even worse is their insistence to remain silent about open issues... there's no way of knowing whether they are even aware of reported problems.

Along this same line I had a factory-related problem which took me down (~10 mph) and caused a very large repair bill. I received one of the bikes that had the right front caliper-bolts fall out (about 70 miles on the bike): the caliper swung free and jammed between the wheel rim and the fork as I was stopping, snapped the axle, twisted the forks and down I went. I believe this was a factory assembly issue with a single worker and was resolved some time ago. Never an indication from BMW that they acknowledged the problem nor that there was any resolution. Unlike your case, everything was covered as a warranty repair and I still have the bike.

Don't forget that we are talking about a Rotax engine that has been 'developed' by BMW. Makes you wonder....

Exactly! There's no way of knowing what part of the installation is ROTAX and what part is BMW. Probably best to not poke at that too much! :toungincheek

Engine cutting out 2010 F650GS

Hi,
I know that the early bikes had problems with the engine cutting out for no apparent reason but I own a 2010 model F650GS with 450 miles on the clock and today the engine cut out as I was changing from 2nd gear to 1st gear in slow moving traffic. There was no juddering or anything - it was just as if someone had hit the kill switch. It started again on the button after the engine turned over a couple of times but it worried me a bit.

Has anyone else with a 2010 model bike had a similar problem?

Any ideas what the fix is for this problem?

Thanks.

Tony

My 2009 800 has probably stalled half a dozen times since I've had it (5 months), mostly when waiting at lights but once when I was moving....

I will mention it at the next service.

Shame, as it tarnishes an otherwise perfect ride.

Cheers

Rich

ps its only done 8k miles

Did it restart with or without a rest?
If you had to turn the ignition off then it could be a fault in the pump or ECU and the can-bus is tripping.

mine restarts easily with a push of the button..

Got a 2010 GS ex demo with 1,000 miles on it when I picked it up, now done 3,500 miles and stalled 3 times usually when going from 3rd to 2nd gear when slowing down, starts straight away without any problem.
Will mention it at 6,000 mile service, presume there should be a fault code in the ecu?
I use regular unleaded, used to run my F800s on super and then tried regular and it didn`t make a blind bit of difference to mpg or power, well none that I could notice.

I got my F800 as an Ex Demo and it has only stalled twice, both times I put it down to me not using enough throttle for the gear it was in.

f 800 stalling issue

My new 800gs has 270 miles on it,(I have come from a 1200 adv and previously 1150 gs) love the bike so far but still running in so havent opened it up yet, anyway I was out yesterday for a quick spin when the engine cut out on a junction, no warning judder or any indication whatsoever just stopped dead as I was turning right in 2nd gear, plenty of revs so positive it wasnt me! Been reading through the popular threads and read that this was an issue with some 08-09 bikes, hoping that this is just a running in blip, any thoughts from the wise?

Stalling

My Anni does just the same if I put cheaper 95 Ron unleaded in it, wierd but true !

Always seems to be slow righthand turns like pulling into the driveway at home :doh

Off the throttle is nowhere near as smooth either.

Hi cocokid. I have a 10 plate 800 GS I bought a couple of months ago. Like you, I had read about the stalling probs on some earlier models. So when mine stalled a couple of times (in the wet, at road junctions, albeit without too many revs) I asked my dealer when they were servicing the bike, if there were any recalls for the problem. They only knew of the earlier probs, but had never had to rectify any themselves. I am just ignoring the problem until it becomes regular. If you start to look for every problem that owners report, you will never get the bike out of your garage. The only problem I have is the rapid throttle reaction that makes slow riding a bit difficult, but as the bike does not want to go slow that often, again I am not worrying that much. As long as it keeps doing 73mpg I will leave it alone.
Enjoy!
