I believe there are 2 current issues:Are there two issues here? The early stalling problem was solved on my bike by an ECU update done on recall. Are people now getting stalling issues on bikes that have had the ECU update?
While there's a possibility that a f/w change may have solved your (former) F800GS's problem, there's also no certainty that the problem would not have persisted. It's a shame a company with the resources and reputation of BMW can't get this issue resolved. Even worse is their insistence to remain silent about open issues... there's no way of knowing whether they are even aware of reported problems. The worrying part of this problem is that it was first mentioned in this forum in March 2008. The clip from 'youtube' brought it all back to me!
If you can be bothered to go back to my letter (N° 10 on this thread) you will see that I was more or less convinced by the dealer that it was my fault, having become so used to the torque of the boxers I had been riding for 30 years. Anyway, the bike was badly damaged (my insurance company 'happily' paid out €2.500 for repairs and as this was my first claim after 60 years I did not lose my no clailms bonus.) and I informed the dealer that I woul not ride it again - he gave me a good deal on a new 1200GS (similar to the one I had been riding since 2004 that I had just part exchanged with him which he resold within the week.) and that was the end of my three day flirtation with the 800. Needless to say my new, now one year old 1200GS does not suffer from this sort (or any other sort) of problem.
Exactly! There's no way of knowing what part of the installation is ROTAX and what part is BMW. Probably best to not poke at that too much!Don't forget that we are talking about a Rotax engine that has been 'developed' by BMW. Makes you wonder....

Hi,
I know that the early bikes had problems with the engine cutting out for no apparent reason but I own a 2010 model F650GS with 450 miles on the clock and today the engine cut out as I was changing from 2nd gear to 1st gear in slow moving traffic. There was no juddering or anything - it was just as if someone had hit the kill switch. It started again on the button after the engine turned over a couple of times but it worried me a bit.
Has anyone else with a 2010 model bike had a similar problem?
Any ideas what the fix is for this problem?
Thanks.
Tony
