Absolutely gutted, picked up my new 1250 GSA Sunday morning and I was absolutely full of excitement and put 100 miles on it over and around the south Devon coast and Dartmoor all without a problem, tucked it into the cozy garage for the night and then this morning the bike was dead. Just enough to turn the tft on but would not even think about starting. So a call to the BMW assist and after a hour and a half wait it was recovered to the dealership. Initial test was a faulty battery so one has been ordered so I need to wait until tomorrow evening to possibly pick it up, I was given a loan bike (f850) which got me to work and back but I’m raging on the inside and it’s really taken the shine off the new bike, it’s not a great start ! And as my first bmw that I’ve been dreaming of buying for 10 years I feel sick, I traded in my old Kawasaki 25k miles and it never missed a beat. F*#@ing gutted! £20k and it lets me down at the first opportunity.

You have reason to be gutted. I was in the same boat with my 1200GSA that needed a new engine after 2000 miles! Takes a while to regain confidence in the bike.

Ok . That’s not great . Sometimes batteries are not great . See if that fixes it . If not , we’ll you could reject it . I had a warning come up on mine 2 days into ownership , took it back, they fixed it , no other issues . These bikes are complex , many things are not analog. Keep the faith, it has a 3 year warrantee . They will not leave you high and dry . And breathe ,

Batteries fail. It's a fact.

Better to fail in your garage than out on the moors in a night-time squall .

In the scheme of things you got lucky and dealer or bmw had no way of predicting that. My Aprilia battery failed and sprayed its acid over the back of the bike with 70 miles on it. Took Aprilia 3 months to replace everything it damaged.

Yep , agree better now than later , shit happens , deal with it and move on . Life is too short to stress about something that gets sorted the Next day

Hopefully this'll be a hickup, and you'll have forgotten all about it in a few days of steady ownership

Sunday morning.... I need to wait until tomorrow evening.....I’m raging on the inside....

My one day old HP4 battery failed whilst I was running it in, without the convenience of the bike being at home. Instead, 100 miles away.

An Adventure biker should take it all (and more) in their stride. You’ll live.

Should have bought a 1150 GS:D

Didn't Teapotone have a similar failure when he was attempting a long distance ride earlier this year on a 1250 he borrowed for the trip?

Shit !!! I never knew batteries had to be run in !!! No wonder they can be temperamental !

Happened me on a new triumph trophy 1200 in 2003. Dealership had neglected to plug something in during pdi. That’s what I was told anyway. Unfortunately troubles didn’t end there. Worst bike I ever had by a long shot. And I liked riding it. JJH

That's a bummer but hey, it's a battery. Probably made by Yuasa and while I'd be pissed off with the situation I wouldn't fall out of love with the bike.
I would have thought the dealer would have swapped a battery out of a stock bike for you though....

Unfortunately you can get a duff battery and whilst I understand this has taken the shine off your new bike. Don’t let it ruin the experience. Shame the dealer didn’t stock the battery either but it could have been worse. These guys could have recovered it for you.......

Yep, his bike failed tremendously.

In the middle of the night, in a small village, pitch black.... total electrical failure.

As Wapping said, it could have been worse. At least you were at home, and not stuck at a garage somewhere, with someone looking at your bike, scratching their head, wondering how on earth they’re going to get it on the back of a lorry! :D

Btw, have you got any aftermarket electrical accessories/ alarm that could have drained the battery overnight?

Failed battery @ home...easily sorted :D better there than in the middle of nowhere, in the dark, pissing with rain without mobile phone reception ;)
