1100 gearbox repair advice please

took longer to work out how to upload pictures than it took to remove the box and strip it!BMW customer service admitted today that theyve seen this happen before but as the bike is out of warranty they dont care.Coincidentally they will only sell the complete intermeddiate gear assembly, not just the shaft. This seems a total piss take as anyone with a couple of pullers can strip the completely undamaged gears off their incorrectly manufactured shaft[the one they already knows is prone to occasional failure].That will be £465+VAT:ronno

Pssssst, not only 1100 boxes - here's a snapped output shaft from an 1150

The snapped U/J with the splined end stuck in the end.

You're probably ahead of me here but it might be worth a phone call to the usual suspects (Motorworks, Sherlocks etc) to see if they've got a second hand shaft available? Or of course Ogni's spare box if its the right year. I'm not sure what the conventional wisdom is but is it worth changing bearings and seals while it's in bits? (I guess fitting a new shaft, you'll have to re-shim regardless?)

ouch!,Steptoes pics from a disaster movie, although the output shaft got forces acting on it in another plane than the idler shaft[sorry not an engineer]probably had some play in the UJ to do that???Done a bit of phoning[have to borrow some tools to shim] and apparently this has definitely not been a one off. This happened to a not inconsiderable amount of the Cops bikes[BMW;have some brand new gearboxes, esteemed customer:bow]This smacks of "not fit for purpose" or whatever it is the bloodsuckers say? This spat the man off,not funny really.Matt, cheers,on the case, can anyone confirm that R/GS/RS/RT1100/850 Boxes run the same ratios, that would really help?Thank you for the help cheers

Hi Argos,

I've got a spare gearbox in bits. The output shaft is shot, but the lay/idler shaft appears OK. You can have that if you're interested. I think it's a '99 box.

Dave.

hi Dave, that could be the ticket,as long as its M97,if you get a chance could you check the 3 letter code on the front casing?thank you for trying to help:)

Just had a look, it isn't too clear, but I think it says '98' on the same stamp as my other spare says '99'. what ever, it's the box with ball-races on te input shaft, unlike the earlier tapered roller set up.

Love it,"my other spare"take it you had some box trouble in the past:)will speak to the man and get back to you!cheers!

Sort of. I managed to snap a large piece out of my original box casing during a momentary lapse of reason whilst adjusting the clutch. The replacement for that started making strange 'rumbling' noises about six months after fitting. It ran OK for six years/50k miles, but eventually I decided on a replacement. When the replacement blew an oil seal on the way back from Paris, I stripped and repaired the original, so the 'replacement' is now a spare. This other spare I got off Muppet when I bought some other bits off him, thought it might be interesting to strip it, find out what's wrong, and repair it. But I think your mate's need is greater than my curiosity...

Another thought, if you're stripping and you've got pullers; if you look back through other 1100 gearbox repair threads on here, there's a thread sort of devoted to replacing the 'wave' washer on the input shaft with a solid washer. I've had a couple of solid washers made up, out of tool steel, for that purpose. You can have one of those as well if you fancy doing that 'mod' at the same time...

on my way to brum early tommorrow, via Penrith and the M6, if its any help, will have to be oil leak proof, as in the wifes car and she wont be impressed at oil stains. :nenau

Heehee, the 'UKGSers Haulage Ltd springs up again! :D I used this service to get my wheels up from Chichester a month or so back.

I can't get out of Kendal Ian, due to lack of transport (bike is off road), but if you could make a short (ish) diversion off the M6 I could meet you and hand over offending items.

That is if someone can come up with a means of getting them on to Argos from Brum...

By the way, Argos, here's a link to that thread about wavy washer replacement..
