Sounds like the rattle is the cam chain tensioner mechanism - they are hydraullically assisted - they usually go on the LHS first for some reason. However - if the noise goes away eventually it might just need cleaning out - big bolt under the barrel.

Has it had an oil change lately and is the level right ?
Its not the clutch or the gearbox,by the sounds of it.
The brakes are good for a mid 90's bike. Strip them, st st hose on, m/c rebuild kit , bleed them and put new pads in.
It sounds like you've bought a cheapy - be prepared to spend money on it in the right places.

1100 wont run

I got my first 1100GS 6 months ago and it has intermittently died a few times usually within a few miles of starting out, although it has 106,000 miles it runs really well when it does run...!! I took a chance and headed to the French Alps on it a couple of weeks ago and for ten days , 2000 miles in sun, hail and snow showers it ran sweet as anything, amazingly the day after i got back it wouldnt start and has not been running reliabily since. It usually starts up ok but then it sounds like an electrical connection breakdown and stops, start it up again only to do the same again and again. I found bad connection through the ignition switch but having by passed this it still wont run right, sometimes by fiddling with wiring and connector blocks it will keep resetting when you can hear the fuel pump cut in and the injectors clicking and also the tacho needle move a bit and occasionaly a back fire... Anybody out there experienced these symptoms before..?? Much appreciate any thoughts to get me back on the bumpy irish roads
PS:It also has the by the sounds of it the same clutch/gearbox rattle and i have been told it is the the clutch arm rattling against the housing, and if you engage it and dis-engage it a few times you can get it to disappear ,

I was waiting for someone to notice that the heading is '1100 questions'.
The reason why I asked about the differences of the camchain tensioners is because the slot must have been put there eventually.
Looking at the engine diagrams, it's clear that the r/h tensioner is fitted nearer to the centre of the chain run, the left hand tensioner is more offset and hence has a more difficult job to do, which is most likely why BMW use a stronger spring in the upgrade kit.
If the differences are just spring strength and having a slot free piston then it's a simple enough matter to machine a new piston from stainless and with some luck sourcing a stronger spring should be possible.
The new tensioner stops the rattling at startover it doesn't have a slot and also has a stronger spring,which of these two features is responsible ?
Has anyone attempted a modification without buying the new parts ?
My next question: Why is there a bar end on the right hand side and the strange rubber thing on the left ? What is it's purpose ?

I did a few miles with the fuel light on today and then filled up 19.3 litres.
Is this about right, the tank looks larger than that ?
Do they normally hold more than this or does the fuel light come on early ?
