hi all, i am new to your forums and have looked at several posts on this subject . as i am half way thru replacing the bearings for the second time in 5000 miles i would like to hear peoples thoughts on the shimming.
in both cases the small taper bearing has spun on the shaft and eaten the shim, thereby allowing play and some noise when cornering two up.

accurate measuring seems to be one of my problems.
also how much preload should the large shims give? i am thinking i need more as i can only ascertain that the original set up had almost none, less than 0.01mm.

If the small taper has spun on the shaft then it must have too thick a shim under the taper bearing , causing the taper to be too tight, making it spin on the shaft instead of the bearing revolving

If you've the patience of a very patient person and can sit through it, this video shows a DIY technique for measuring the FD bearing clearance and calculating shim thickness. I make no claim as to its effectiveness (I've never tried it) but it might help.

Be warned it goes into a lot of detail and the guy who made it has a bit of a laboured delivery. Also it isn't the best edited video you'll ever see! I downloaded it by right clicking - save target as.

Hmmm, I think maybe your taper bearing needs securing with something like Loctite 271 stud & bearing fix to stop it spinning on the shaft, replace it's shim again then set up your large output bearing shimming with the help of that video, it does go on a bit but the core info and method seems sound to me.

If you alter the taper bearing shim it will alter the engagement of the crown wheel to the pinion, I don't know whether you want to address that or avoid it
