Picked my GS up a couple of weeks ago. Only a couple of minor niggles, really, but one's quite annoying.

I can't stand it on the sidestand. The fuel pump won't prime with it down, when I flip it up, it prims and the gear indicator/petrol guage (I can't remember the nerdy name for it, I'll call it the HUD from now on) comes on. BMW Battersea said it could be an import or it could have been converted to act like that. It's quite annoying. Any suggestions?

The right hand heated grip is much warmer than the left.

There's quite a sooty deposit on the exhaust can. My Dad cleaned it off when I got to his house, but in the miles since, it's built up again. Running rich? Is that a problem that needs to be cured?

Thanks in advance...

Sidestand's is as it should be. You could by-pass it.

Grips sound buggered.

Check the plugs to see if the mixture's ok. My 1100 end pipe always looks sooty but the plugs look good so I don't worry.

Your HUD is actually known as the RID (Rider Information Display).

The sidestand operation is normal, and a pain in the arse, for the 1100. You can either short out the switch or take it off the sidestand, tape it up in the "up" position and tuck it behind the starter motor for future reffitting. Battersea BMW clearly need thir arses kicking for not knowing that.

Have you tried the grips in both settings. one way puts the heated grips in parrallel the other in series - try it in both and give them chance to warm up. if it still does it you need to measure the resistance of the grips.

As boxer says - A sooty pipe is normal, just check the plugs.

Gs 1100 Standard !

My1100 Side Stand Switchs works like that. So?
Am I wrong? But you do realise The Throttle Grip side warms first on all Grip Warmers? Or are you saying it is cooler all the time?
Oh. Also my Thinsulate Lined Gloves keep the Heat out. I find it warmer with my summer gloves (I have Hand Guard exstentions also) . BJ.:beerjug:

The right haand grip always feels warmer - was the case with my new bike, my 1100 and my friends 650.

They say it is because you hold it firmer being the throttle.

So long as there is heat coming from both I wouldn't worry.

Side Stand - There's a reason for everything

Used to think it was a pain not being able to start the bike with the side stand down. But ................... earlier this year in this vicinity, a rider on another make of bike was killed when he found that after overtaking a lorry he could not pull back in - he had started the bike with the stand down and it was still down :(

Since then, i have always accepted this as a welecome safety aid.

The RH grip always feels warmer because it has the throttle plastic sleeve insulating the element from the bar.
The rich mixture problem should be cured by a service.Checking TPS voltage and adjusting the CO2 mixture doodah.(best do a search).

All normal for a 1100GS in standard trim..................nothing to worry about as everyone else has said

Thanks guys, I was wondering if it was a standard setting. I may remove it and lock it up.

I can live with the grips, the throttle one is the warmer one, just something I noticed riding back in summer gloves. I'll have to read up on servicing it and give it a shot. With the help of my doting father, of course...

No, he wouldn't. Keep guessing...

I haven't posted on here in ages, but in the interest of keeping everyone up-to-date, I've (well, me Dad) sorted the sidestand problem by removing the switch altogether and completing the circuit.

This also saved me a vital 6g in weight, easily shaving 0.0006 seconds from a weekend's riding...

Hmm I'd have left it in and rewired to cut the ignition if you put it in gear with the sidestand down

A relay, 2 dods of wire and an integration into the neutral light wire and the kill switch. S'easy

So bloody easy to leave those buggas down when they're under the jugs!

Yup - agreed - that was the mod on mine and it was spot on useful :blast

BTW - my grips always felt like that too.

I'm buying a multimeter later on in the week, as the left grip doesn't come on at all now, and my hand is cold...
