1150 Bolts

Can anyone point me in the direction of some rear wheel stainless steel bolts for the 1150 GS.

Didn't I read somewhere that SS on wheels - any wheels is a no no, something to do with the hardness and not streching enough, plus the risk of stripping the hub threads.

Your probably right. I was thinking that would be the case. Maybe just get some nice new clean ones. Or can you get chrome plated ones? I have seen them on car wheels.

Probably be better off powdercoating them black or something unless its bling you want?

The standard ones aren't expensive (from BMW) and as long as you don't let anyone use an air-ratchet on them the coating will last.

Or stick them through a piece of cardboard and give them a quick spray with silver smoothrite

They're about 2 quid each (less than a can of Smoothrite and less faffing about too).

My wheels ok. Its just the bolts that look grotty. Guess I'll buy some new ones from Bahnstormers when I get back on the road.

I need to do that to my back wheel - the powder coat on the wheel bolt side of the hub has bubbled badly. Not looking forward to stripping the old coating though - lots of nooks and crannies (it was bad enough doing the rocker covers).

Job for a wet winter weekend I think...

I meant stripping the old coating
The painting is a piece of cake compared to the prep.

I painted my rocker covers last winter in the garage - just warmed the cover beforehand and gently cured each coat with a hot air gun (kept the paint can on a radiator in the house).

Do you reckon this would be the same for the bolts that hold the brake caliper onto the rear drive?

IMHO using SS bolts in safety critical areas is risky - especially if the torque requirements were originally for std mild steel bolts.
But thats my opinion, other folk opinions may differ.
