1150 fuel pump primes but wont start

Cutting out

Fuel filter is in the tank change it possibly be ok, make sure uop put it in the right way round and you''' require two new small jublee clips as the std BM ones are not really re-usable abnd are horrible things.

Checked filter...clean as a whistle....seems to be running ok now....acid test is when I take it out again....bloody heavy to push back home and I'm not really into getting it recovered again......gonna have some tea and take her out for a spin....watch this space....(Yawn!!!)

Well she's running, seems to be ok....still seems very slightly hesitant when holding throttle steady and occasional pop from the stubby :augiebut other than that :nenau

Still not convinced it was the hall sensor as she still cut out after replacing it but who knows, was probably prudent to replace anyway, and thanks for the advice given by all. Hope I haven't spoken too soon:blast

Just a thought though, When I put her in the garage a week ago after a lot of wet weather, wondered whether some unseen corrosion has 'furred up' whilst not being used and caused this problem:confused:

Anyway, watch this space, I'll update tomorrow.:thumb2

Coil

had a misfire on my R80GS and it would stall. I stripped the carb, checked fuel filters but nothing worked until I changed the coil, when the problem disappeared. Might have been coil, HT lead or plug cap.

Had a similar problem on an 1150 GS, turned out the fuel filter had a slight split in it and sometimes fuel system pressurised ok- injectors worked - and bike ran fine. Other times it didn't and bike would not start.

Very frustrating, finally would not start and had to be recovered to dealer who diagnosed the problem.

Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I also thought it was the HAL unit. Cost $300. Real easy to put on. When finished, tried to start it.....nothing. I had spark and mist coming out of the injector.....DAMN.....what now.

When turning on the key I also had the pump prime..........Pulled the tank and pump out. Found that the small "U" shaped piece of fuel line coming off the filter had a 1" slit in the side. It was allowing the pump to prime but not hold pressure to keep the motor running. Replaced it now she runs like a striped ass ape.

Fuel pump - as mentioned before? Sensors, leaks in pipes?

I'm impressed you managed the Hall Sensor fix, though!

Apparently, some of the fuel filter prior to a certain date (can't remember the date, but Haynes Manual gives the info) were prone to splitting, so this is a possible.
A very unlikely cause could be the Roll-Over valve sticking, and preventing air getting in to fuel tank to replace the fuel used, but this is, as I said, very unlikely.
Also, on the top of the fuel pump there is a small metal strip, and I think this is a kind of pressure release- on my pump when it failed, pushing this down a few times seemed to relase the pressure, and pump functioned again, so re-installed the pump. However, it did finally fail again after a couple of hundred miles, so not a reliable fix ....cured by installing new pump, new filter, and replacing clips.
By any chance do you get an intake of air if you open the fuel filler cap, after doing a good few miles ? If so, might be the rubber hose to the roll-over valve is blocked ?

Back again:bounce1:clap

Ran fine today, still 'feels' slightly not right but didn't cut out or splutter, so far so good. Can still hear pump priming sometimes when at lights etc and I'm sure it didn't do it before :duno
I've read on here that some bikes seem to do it all the time with no ill effect so who knows?:nenau

No probs with acceleration, no flat spots or hesitancy so I'm reasonably convinced it's fixed now:blast:blast:blast Now why have I said that?

?

The pump runs continuously when the engine is running.

It only primes when the ignition is turned on before the engine is started ,once it's started and running the fuel pump is working all the time . This is the same for all the bikes.

Finally a true likeness of the man him self, obviously when he was younger.

Hall effect sensor, seems the most likely culprit, is the fuel pump making a different sound to normal?

DOE beaten by ST eptoe :blast

mine is:( thought it was the battery and in fact I'm testing mine tomrroow morning. under load obviously.
