:tears Bike has just covered 51k and i noticed the gearbox has started to whine in all gears on the thottle but not on the over run.

This is the second GS 1150 i've had where the bearings have gone in the gearbox the first one went at 75k:tears:tears:tears

Am I unlucky or is it a common fault:confused:

Any ideas if not using the clutch on upshifts is causing the fault? Never had any problems with any other bike.

Anyway any hints on the bearing causing the whine i'm getting at the moment, as I said it happens in all gears but only on open thottle not with a shut thottle. Might leave it for now till it gets worse, changed the oil last night just to be on the safe side and the old oil was like new with no bits in.

Cheers Matt

Well 120 looks but no comments:confused:

Any way I have taken the box out and so far found the slave cylinder leaking, the main hose from the master to the slave badly corroded, diff bearing noisy and the clutch plate worn.:blast

Ill take the box apart and see which bearings have gone in there.

Matt

Stripped the box and found the input shaft bearing has gone, so will replace all the bearings and seals.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where and which bearing makes are best for the job

Thanks Matt

I got mine from BSL, they weren't too expensive and had them all in stock.
It has probably been discussed here before but why sealed bearings inside the box which seems to have oil ways machined in the casing beats me.

:nenau Recently there seems to a lack of technical assistance forthcoming in here - must be holiday season...

I've never done a gearbox but my 2p:

It may sound unlikely but check with a main dealer for the bearings. Surprisingly they can be cheaper than the likes of motorworks for certain things like this.

If you go to a bearing supplier I'd get 'named brand' European bearings rather then the Chinese imports that some sell. I'd use OEM seals (from either dealer or Motorworks etc).

Are you geared up to reshim the box when you reassemble? I've not done it myself but I've read about it on here and ADV - apparently it needs either a special tool (fits instead of the gearbox endplate and allows you to use a depth micrometer) or a modified old gearbox end plate so that you can set the shaft end float.

While you're in there it might be worth checking and possibly changing the clutch master cylinder and gear position indicator switch. Same for the clutch - adds to the cost but if it's worn consider a clutch kit too (never just change the plate).

Check the shafts for grooving in the way of the seal lands - this caught me out when doing the gearbox output seal on my 1100 - the shaft had grooved and the new seal leaked after 100miles or so.

Hopefully someone who's done this will chip in.

Good luck (and take some pictures / consider writing up your experiences) :thumb

Bought all my bearings and seals from bmw not dear at all

Thanks for the replys, i'll check with bm on prices.

I've got a new clutch, slave with braided hose and I might have a new gear position switch in the garage.

I had a chat with a BMW tech and he said not to worry about checking the shimming as he said you are only changing like for like and they dont bother:augie

Cheers Matt
