My 1150 seems to use rear pads more quickly than fronts. I'm pretty sure I don't drag the pedal and don't use the rears much at all, except at very low speed.

It was serviced in July last year and the pads are down to the rivets again - probably less than 3000 miles.

Someone has suggested that it may be early signs of the servo going south - anyone experienced this?

It's happened a lot to some bikes and for no apparent reason, but only once with me.
I even resorted to cleaning the disc holes with a drill bit to clean any abrasive debris.

It can also happen on F650 singles and that's down to a problem with the rear cylinder sticking.

Same here, non servo 2003,owned from new, still on original fronts at 34,000 but on the 4th set of rears.

Stripped all the brakes this week and fronts still ok but rears will need replaced pretty soon.

My 1100 has gone through4 rears in 30K and only one set of fronts. I recently put a new rear dis on so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference although there was never any noticeable drag before

If it's been a year between brake services, then that's too long, I'd guess. Unbolt the caliper and make sure you can separate to two halves of it (ie the caliper and the carrier) - these should slide easily on the pins. If they are seized it may explain why your pad wear is excessive...

Mike

Long time since I've seen riveted brakes... have you tried touching the rear disc after a run, especially if you don't use the rear brake? If it's hot then that will tell you the caliper is sticking

So I don't have to worry about the servo?

No, it occurs on servo/non servo + abs/no abs bikes even with the caliper and carrier moving freely, piston clean and free etc.

When a gang of mainly 1150s rode around the Baltics a few years back 6-8 of the bikes had knackered rear pads after only about 2k miles.

It had been pissing down for most of that:nenau

Yet, I ride an 1150 7k miles to Mongolia on wet, grimy Russian roads. then a further 10k miles with much of that off road and still had the same pads when I got back:confused:

OK, maybe they're not rivits, but the sound is definitely of metal upon metal

Brakes

Just changed a set about an hour ago.

Mine seems to go though rear pads quicker than I can order them!

Its had three sets since last September, but then its done a few miles.

I have a new disc waiting to fit, but the old ones not that bad yet.

Caliper not sticking, not riding the pedal, but I do use the back brake a lot, just my style of riding, guess it goes a long way back to Brit bikes.

Also the pads are not that thick when new.

Mine munches the rear pads too. I think some of it is down to the make of rear pads fitted and the cheaper ones only last a few thousand miles (8 ish)

I must be doing something wrong...bought a set of pads off steppers over two years ago, still in their wrapper...the current set still doing their thing after 30+k...:nenau

Got through two sets of bmw pads in 15k. The disc was pretty groved as well. Fitted a cheapish Grimica disc (motobins) and Ferodo pads, 15k miles later and still lots of meat on the pads and the disc is still perfect.

Fronts look about half worn, but are still the original pads.

Wow, my rear pads used to last 12k plus miles on my 1150.
And I use the back brake a lot.

I used to change them cos they were getting really grotty and rusty rather tha worn out.
I only changed the fronts once in 30k miles, cos like the backs, they were getting really rusted.

Despite meticulous prep, I was one of them! :blast

I put it down to BMW changing the friction material from asbestos-based to cheese-based.

Yes mate, I remember but I for one wasn't using BMW supplied pads although your probably right, it can only really be down to pad material:thumb
