dropped my 03 bike of at garage to get the smoking spark plug sorted / full service / mot and broken rear light fixed, as I chatted to the lad a drop of oil appeared on the back wheel then another and another, assumed it was just the seal but when he has had a look the final drive bearing has started to collapse causing the seal to fail.
has told me its more cost effective for me to get a second hand one rather than him rebuild the one that's on the bike,

any advice on best place to source a replacement would be great,

Second hand one :blast

The bearing isn't that expensive it's the labour that costs.

I reckon £150 max all in

It's the shaft drive equivalent of chain and sprockets:thumby:

If I bought a S/H one the first thing I would do is change the bearing!!!:thumb

It has been done on the side of the road, with minimal tools, so he is spinning you one:green gri

Time to find another mechanic. The advice to fit a second hand one is a sign of someone who does not know how to replace the bearing.

You will find lots of advice on here about how to change bearing - I am not a great mechanic but did mine a couple of years ago when it failed at 80k and it is pretty easy job - difficult bit was getting old bearing off which needed two of us with prise bars. Getting new one on simple with use of freezer for hub and oven for bearing. Took about two hours from start to finish.

think im going to have to borrow a trailer to get the bike back home then make a decision....

spoke to lad at sunderland and he quoted 170 to replace bearing and seal. my mechanic closed until Monday so gonna be then before I can do anything... , thanks for all the replies

36k mate. Was in for its yearly service when noticed the oil leak.
I'd never noticed any vibrations or grumbling at all prior to dropping it off.

Didn't St.Epto do a thread on replacing the FD bearing a few years ago? It might be in the Font of all Wisdom section. :thumb2

I carry the bearing and seal with me on trips, not a big job, bearing is £40 and seal is £20, if you buy one from BMW it's a German bearing not chinease. They are the cheapest also, Steptoe informed me this :)

Probably the weakest link in the 1150GS chain. My original bearing failed at 26,000 miles just out of warranty. Having never done anything like that I bought the bits and did it myself. My one lasted 35,000 miles. As stated above quite simple and a leisurely couple of hours to do with the aid of a freezer and domestic oven. Stepoe does it with a cuban cigar and an ice lolley in 3 minutes 40 seconds. After that the lolley has melted too much :D
.
If you can't get the bits PM me as I have a bearing and seal bought as spares on a long trip and never used. Sold the 1150 so not needed.

I replaced the main bearing and seal myself. Like Grim Rider I found the difficult bit was removing the old bearing, a local machine shop took it off for me for £5 worth of drinking vouchers. Follow the Idiots guides linked in earlier posts and it should be no problem. :thumb2
