1150GS leaking seal

Hello everyone , this is my first post.
After a trip up to the Yukon I noticed a oil leak at the rear of my swingarm just in front of the gaiter(dust cover). I pulled back the gaiter and found that oil had accumulated inside and was leaking out. Which seal is leaking? Is it oil leaking out of the gearbox or from the final drive. I have not checked the oil levels yet. Before taking the wheel off and diving into it I was looking for a few thoughts or suggestions. Thanks

Hi mate and welcome,

I think you will find that it's the gearbox output shaft seal. It's a common failure due to wear and tear etc. Straight forward job by all accounts but I am no mechanic, its just what I have read on here.

Keep an eye on your gearbox level for the time being. Some chaps here have just returned from Morocco and one of the riders had the same problem and he didn't even need to top up the box.

The input bevel seal is more common !!!!. Check the oil level in the gearbox and the rear bevel - you may find the levels are correct in both. In which case don't worry about it, just keep your eye on them. The oil could be just the seals breathing.

I'm having a bad day. It's a black and white day. Everything is clear = which means low tolerance .

Stoopid question deserves a stoopid answer - make reinhold think and post a more reasoned question. And it wasn't just reinhold i replied to, blues and twos got a curt answer as well, i'm very even handed .

And i've given him the correct advice, unlike you - whats the problem with that.

Understand you may have a problem reading, but the question asked, got the reply needed , as posted , and copied for you below . As i said, if he doesn't give any more detailed information, it's as best answer he can expect. Unless your a mind reader ( oops,sorry, forgot,you can't read. Full stop )

Perhaps i should have added - if the levels are low in the gearbox or rear bevel, that'll be whats leaking. I'd have thought that wouldn't need pointing out, but again, i'm not a mind reader, so don't know whats reinholds mechanical abilities are - i'm guessing at very low, judging by the question asked. So even if he finds the leak, i think it'll be way beyond his ability to fix it, and if he is quite knowledgable to be able to fix it, why ask the question. ?

I did actually read that you had given him a begrudging reply of sorts - but only after the other bad tempered and curt diatribe which really was uncalled for.

Just because someone doesn't have the supreme technical knowlwdge that you have doesn't stop them wanting to know what MAY be wrong with thier bike and wishing to understand more.

PS. The 'oh you can't read' sarcasm is a woefully poor attempt at a distraction technique. (from YOUR personality and moderator shortcomings)

You started the personal abuse. The "can't read comment" is because i posted the answer, and i don't want to have to go through it all again - as i've just had to .

If they really wanted to know, and actually fix the problem they would be better off getting a manual ( that goes for anyone, me included), and then asking a question. Not asking a question that can only be answered by having the bike in front of you. I can't help people that can't be arsed to help themselves. He's looked and seen some oil ( he doesn't even say how much oil, a smear, drop, or cupful. I don't want to be answering his next question, which no doubt would have the same lack of information to act on, so said what to do, and how to ask, in a plain and simple way that he can understand, and take offence at .

Let him check the oil levels in the rear bevel, and gearbox. How many more times do i have to begrudgingly post it .

FFS Steptoe mellow out! Thanks for the advice though. Like I said I just wanted an opinion before I started to take things apart. Wondered if it was a common problem.

What are you going to take apart ? You may not have to if you check the oil levels - How much oil came out of the gaiter, and was there water in it, or just oil.

Always going off the handle, it's a side effect of the medication - and it's kittens i prefer drowning.

I would suggest that if you are in an arsy mood not to reply as it has pissed me off reading your rude and balshy reply.

I just try and help out where I can, albeit with a limited knoweldge of these bikes.
