Wondering if anyone can help out here - here is the story so far.....

Replaced slave cylinder for clutch the other week (Thanks for the help on that one) and then decided to do a few other bits - bike is 62k so needs a bit of TLC every winter !

Anyway, replaced fuel filter and found a few studs were shagged so sorted that out. I think I might have put the filter in the wrong way and then tried to start it - no lights for gear indicator and no fuel level showing. I took it apart changed the filter round and same thing happened. After a bottle of beer decided it might be the breather pipes so took it apart and then changed those over - same result.

My thinking is fuel pump but these are expensive so thought I'd ask first !

Lesson learnt here is don't put a jerry can of fuel in the tank as you have to suck it out again :spitfire

Any help appreciated on this - option 2 is I take a match to thing or visit a BMW dealer with my credit card.

It may be a silly question, but have you done up all the connectors when you put it back together?

aye - checked all pipes to/from the pump along with checking the studs and the seal round the tank - all seem good

make sure the plug thats next to the tank bolt is clean and connecting, a bad connection would give the symtoms you have, as it powers the pump and the fuel sender. ;)

other than that, check that the kill switch is on.

You'll need to give some more info - does the pump prime i.e. can you hear it when you turn the ignition on.

Do you have Q/D connectors, or just flexi fuel line that connects to the rigid pipes. Have these been connected to the correct pipes i.e. fuel in and fuel return.

What way around is the fuel filter at the moment ?? Instead of keep swopping the fuel filter around, just insert it in the correct way - there's an arrow on it for the fuel flow direction, and it's an inch away from the pump so doesn't take much to work out .

You'll end up confusing yourself by keeping on trying lots of different things to solve the problem without knowing what the problem is. .

What you are describing sounds like electrical are you sure that connector plug is correctly fitted just in front of the tank securing bolt???

Kill Switch?????

Is it in Gear and sidestand down??

Filter direction is a red herring in the case of the R.I.D.

Cheers - I can't hear the pump when I turn the ignition on so I'll check the electrics.

On the fuel filter, I looked at the book that showed arrow going to fuel pump but the one I took out was pointing away from the fuel filter - the mistake I made was not reading the book just looking at the picture. Last changed it about 2 or 3 years ago and just took the same as it was approach.

I'll stop moving things around and look at the sparks to see how I get on - I disconnected the side stand electrics about 4years ago - dodgy side stand !

Thanks again for the pointers - let you know how I get on after I hit the shed at lunchtime.

The filter is upstream of the pump, not before it.

You have an electrical problem. As well as the tank plug, check the pump fuse.

It's alive now - didn't do a thing just went out and put the key in, I can only assume it had some dampness in the plugs or something as it has been off the bike for a week.

Cheers fellas for all the hints - a lot better than my mates advice of ''just buy a new one"; I intend to bury this thing in a field when I'm finished with it (hopefully I'll get at least 300k out of it)

El;ectrics

have a look at your "modified" side stand wiring.

I know this is an old thread, but after taking the tank off for a general spring clean, I had a non starting R1150GSA. Previous to this it fired and ran fine.
Spark good. Fuel present at the injectors but no pressure (lack of oomph - like gravity pressure from the tank). and the injectors were 'ticking' perfectly.
Turns out that the U connection hose to the filter (Page 349 - Clymer) had become disconnected. The clip was kind of loose and after re-fitting the u-hose and nipping the clip up a little, the bike ran on the first try.
The bike is new to me so maybe this was the result of a previous owner replacing or cleaning the fuel filter .. who knows.
