Hi everyone,

i'm just writing up a list of jobs to do as I put my bike back together over the next few weeks.

I noticed two things tonight.

Firstly, the oil inspection window is a little milky in the middle. I'm convinced there's no water in the oil - the hazing is centered around the middle of the glass, rather than being within the oil at the filler hole. I don't remember seeing this last year - should I be worried about it? There is some paint flaking on the case around the glass, but i'm assuming they seal internally so i'm assuming it should be fine. I've seen a few posts with folk swapping the glass out, and it looks like a real pain in the arse - does it need doing or will it be fine for now?

Secondly, i'm sure it's been gone through a million times, but what oil should I be putting in? The last service receipt shows Castrol Power 1 20w50, but there's no indication if this is semi or fully synth. I'm going to do a full oil and filter change, so i'm not overly concerned about mixing oils, but should I be using fully, or semi synth when I get round to it?

Any advice appreciated as always!

Cheers chaps!

So you'd just use any oil? Doesn't it need to be up to BMW spec? I'm not sure I'd want to put just anything in...

Also, what's the view on 20/50 oil? I've read it's supposed to make the engine sound a bit quieter.

Finally, is there a 'sight glass swap how-to' on the forum. With pictures.... :)

Cheers!

yes, there is HERE.... or was. The pictures have expired as they have done on most of my "How To" guides.. I really really must get around to reposting them

Cheers steptoe!

Out of interest, and without pics, when you break the 'glass', what stops fragments going into the sump.... And do you hook it from the outside or inside?

Also, do you have any oil advice fella?

When you have a replacement oil sight glass in your sweaty little hands it'll be obvious why pieces don't end up in the sump.

Another vote for 10/40 here. A previous 1150 of mine got us to Rome and back without burning any ;)

So, just to confirm - any (even car) 10/40 semi synth will suit the 1150GS, with no issues with failing seals or other nastiness?

Also, should I stump up for an oem filter, or are pattern ones acceptable?

Yes any 10/40 semi synth will be fine.

I've always used genuine oil filters. I'm sure other filters will be fine but genuine has always been my preference as the saving is not that great in the grand scheme of things.

A good oil filter for your bike. <a href="http://www.opieoils.co.uk/product-finder.aspx?categoryid=1238&SEName=mahle-oil-filter-fuel-filter-air-filter-look-up#results" target="_blank">Linky</a>
