I've got a 1150 GS single plug 2001 and has covered 13,000 miles.
It rattles a little on start up for about half a second I guess before oil pressure rises!!
Is this common or do i need to get Tappet clearances etc adjusted.
George

was due a service at 12K miles matey.. if its rattling then something got missed methinks.

hmm

at the risk of stirring up a hornets nest, what oil are you using? If you are not using a heavier oil like an old-fashioned 20/50 perhaps that might help. Mine was certainly noticeably quieter after changing to 20/50.

likely characteristic rattle of cam-chain while tensioner hydraulic part pressurises.
First - fill with 20/50 mineral oil.
Second -if not solved well enough, change camchain tensioner for new type, around 20 quid and 20 minutes. no spring in new type. Search away here for many details.

+2 on what he said.
Its the nearside tensioner you need-the oil drains out of it when the motor isn't running.
I think the new tensioners are more than 20 quid though.
Do a search on here for part numbers or the spares numpty will probably sell you the old one.
Use 15/50 or 20/50 mineral or semi-synth if you're rich.Grade SF/SG onwards.

Next thing you'll be telling us you can hear the indicators clicking as they go on and off:D

Try having an old Ducati, then you'll know all about rattles. That's why we put loud exhausts on 'em, to drown out the ''pile of nuts and bolts being shaken in a tin box'' effect. :comfort

Seriously though, you've asked the right guys for advice.

Doesn't need to be an old one;with a little bit of work even a brand new one can sound like a pile of nuts and bolts in a tin can.:D

The old one is no longer available. If you put the part number of the old one into the dealer system it'll refer you to the new one. No chance of getting the wrong one in that respect.

I think they're a fair bit more than £20 too, once you've bought the separate components (think it's body, piston and washer?) that make up the tensioner.

just done mine it was £48 for all three bits from bmw dealer all quiet now

Mine does the same and I thought it was the older tensioner, but it has already been done (15mm bolt head not 17mm like RHS)
Do they wear out?!

Oh,
so before I post in Fs&w, I have a brand new never fitted piston/tensioner and washer if anyone wants it.

£45 inc PP

Pm if interested.
