Ok, start this query with a dumb question: the 1150GS (2000/W reg) has a mechaniscal speedo 'cable', nothing electric/electronic there? My speedo doesn't work anymore (worked fine when I set off this morning, then stopped, in 0 position). Odometer etc also not getting reading.

Once I get back home tonight, I guess I can loosen the cable at the bottom and see whether the inside is still in one piece (assuming mechanical drive and not electronic). How easy/difficult is it to get into the top part and what else might be wrong apart from just a knackered speedo drive (I'm not the best mechanic in the world, and the next BM dealer is 30 miles away in the opposite direction of work ... :spitfire ).

thanks

Martin

It's 50/50 between the cable or the drive unit at the wheel .

Take the cable off the drive unit at the wheel, turn the inner cable by hand and see if the speedo works.

If so, your cables OK

I replaced my speedo cable quite recently and its not too difficult. You will need to remove the entire cable to check if its working properly. You need to turn the one end and see if the other end turns too. A new one can be bought from Motorbins or BMW Motorworks for around £14 plus delivery.

Removing the bottom end is straightforward and simple, you'll see.

The top end requires the removal of the screen and top protection plate to get to the instrument panel. You also need to remove the instrument panel from its mounting (needs a bit of force to pull them off the rubber mountings, just make sure all the screws are out!). Some hex type screwdriver fitting are required, but otherwise its quite straightforward. The top of the speedo cable is screwed into the underside of the speedo readout, just unscrew it. You will also need to cut a cable tie which holds the cable in place on the frame. A new cable tie will be needed to fix it back to the frame when you're done.

Also remember when you put it all back together, you need to push the instrument panel firmly back into its mounting, there are some rubber shoes that they need to fit into. If not, the protection plate on top of the instrument panel will touch the screen. This happened to me and I now have to remove the screen and panel again to refit.

Hope this helps.
