My warranty runs out soon, so I don't necessarilly need to go to a BMW main stealer for servicing.

Are there any after market tools out yet to read the electronics and check error codes? Or are you tied into the stealers because of this?

I really must check when the next service is due!

No software out yet -

do as i do. I've started servicing 1200GS's, everythings the same for servicing as any other bike - just call your local dealer and have the bike "plugged" in for any recent upgrades.

There's a company called Hexcode Microsytems in South Africa who are currently working on a system to interrogate BMW motorcycle ECU's.

This is an extract from an e-mail I received from them in May of this year:

"......we started looking into this early
2004... well, nearly 2.5 years later and we are about a month or two
away from beta releases...

For the time being you will be able to read the General Controller info
(all the part numbers, VIN and software versioning information, as well
as read and erase the Fault codes for almost ALL BMW motorcycles...
(that are diagnosable) - the software is called GS-911 (an emergency
tool for GS bikes, that are generally not near a service center when
things go wrong... ;-) ) however the tool will work on most motorcycles
and of course we aim to cover ALL of them eventually!

you can find some screenshots here http://www.hex.co.za/hexdiag/GS-911.html
this page I set up when Simon asked me how far we were... (Don't know if
you know of Simon and Lisa Thomas (www.2ridetheworld.com ) -great
people... have a look at their website..

Anyway, you can find some more (un)official info on www.hexcode.co.za

I will most definitely add you to my interest list... and let you know
when the tool is ready for release, as well as when the website is up etc...

Oh yeah, almost forgot, 2 more things:
1. what bike(s) do you have?
2. the tool will also be available in a mobile version (with bluetooth)
;-) - not always practical to be carrying your laptop around with you
just for in case.... ;-)"

Regrettably, Yes! It just strikes me as a rather sweeping insult especially to those dealers who frequent this site.

Ah well. Just me being a BOF.

You don't feel that being forced to use a main dealer is a form of robbery?

Freedom of choice and market forces "should" allow me to choose who services my bike, not be compelled to use one of three dealers miles away from me.

The three nearest dealers.... (the distances are the straight line measurement BTW, they are all over 50 miles by road!)

Cannon Motorcycles
Regina Road
Chelmsford CM1 1PE
Tel: / 01245 496444
Details This dealer is located approximately 36 miles away.

Balderston Motorcycles
339 Lincoln Road
Peterborough PE1 2PF
Tel: / 01733 565470
Details This dealer is located approximately 36 miles away.

SBW Motorrad
33-37 Chambers Street
Hertford SG14 1PL
Tel: / 01992 583135
Details This dealer is located approximately 37 miles away.

While I've had reasonable but pricey service from the dealer I have used from that list, the other 2 dealers on that list have recieved very negative reports.

having just had my recently aquired 1200GS serviced at a BMW main dealer (Southport superbikes) i can say it was significantly cheaper than an equivalent service on any Jap bike i have owned eg......

major service (inc. valve clearances) Kawasaki ZX6R.........£400
major service (inc. valve clearances) BMW 1200GS............£170

i would do my research a little better before calling it "stealer servicing"

now my car servicing THAT IS a bloody rip-off........ hydraulic tappets, fuel injection, nothing to adjust or set.......how can it cost £330 for 4litre of oil and 2 filters?

"how much?"

Only 2 things you HAVE to use a dealer for: Buying a new bike and, depending on your bike, having the computer read/updated. Obviously you might also want warranty work carried out there.

Even if you feel you must use a dealer, its not the dealer that makes you go there so why accuse them?

It appears you still have 3 virtually equidistant dealers to choose from and you have made a choice based on the views on this site. Fair enough but hardly an absence of freedom of choice.
