Hi
I was involved in an accident on my GSA1200 08 PLATE the other day, some nice chap pulled out on me in his gleaming Aston Martin. It was a fifty mph impact, i was catapulted down the road and managed to walk away apart from a few bruises and damage to me crown jewels.
Question! how strong are these bikes? having been to have a look at my bike , it has taken force through forks, which are bent back and i,m wondering if they will write it off,not sure if frame will have taken a good tweak, other damage is lefthand crash bar has ripped into rocker cover and left all my oil all over road, seat also decided to take a flight into hedge, together with my sat nav which i could not find!
I think overall bike performed well, and i think the riding position gets you out of trouble.
Cheers
Martin

Don't know much regarding your question but glad you're OK, sounds like you were pretty lucky.

was it 007??

seriously though - post a foto and we should be able to help.

Assuming the Aston driver's insured I'd get the bike to a reputable crash repairer/dealer for an assessment and quote(s).

Even with pics we'd have no idea of assessing the damage.

Glad you're ok though

Sounds like a head-on or almost head-on, at 50mph the headstock is likely to be damaged meaning a written off frame and bike.

This happened to me with a Fazer 1000 a few years ago, much lower speed and a glancing blow with a Mercedes sprinter, much less apparent damage than yours and it was written off.

Glad you survived!

I think its all in the hands of the insurance assessor now and if it's financially viable to fix or write off depending on the book value of your bike. I'm really glad you're ok though :thumb2

Bad Luck mate!!
At least you survived and your ok though!! to be honest I would be hesitant to ride it again! if the collision was full on.. as you say, i'd of thought damage would be extensive, i.e twists and cracks etc..but then again who knows:nenau
Good luck with it anyway.

Can't see the insurer being able to repair it to a state where it will be guaranteed roadworthy without major repairs / money.

Crash test dummy

Thanks for the crash test - all useful info.

Glad to hear you're (mostly) OK

crown jewels still work!

just different colour!
When i glanced up towards head stock you can see forks bent back and they are a reasonable diameter, so that force has got to be transfered into headstock.
Bike is goin to a place called fourth dimension, all thro ebike any one know em.
Would be happier getting money so i can buy another and not some repaired job .
see what happens

50mph, fek me, I'd just be happy to walk away. If the forks are bent back the frame is shot. If the frame is shot, its a write off.

I'd start thinking about new bikes - the compo you're gonna get should pay for a nice new one!!

I hope that you managed to hit the drivers door dead centre and that the SMIDSY clown has plenty of bruising to remind him of his stupidity over the coming days.

Glad, and amazed, that you managed to walk away.

Might be worth you appointing an independent loss assessor as it's an eBike policy you were covered by.

Usually a good move in any case. Have you got legal cover or access?

The assessors are really the only ones to know but............

When my bike was written off last year, I spoke to the assessor and he told me that unlike cars where they will repair almost to the value of the car, with bikes, they tend to be written off once the cost of the repair exceeds 50% of the value of the bike. The reason for this is that it's cheaper for the insurance company since the salvage values are quite high. To give you an idea:

The damage to my bike was approx £5,000 so the insurance company wrote the bike off and gave me £7,000. They then sold it for £4,000 so in the end, my accident cost the company £3,000 in total rather than the £5,000 for the repair (saving themselves £2,000). A polish guy bought it.......guess he could repair it for less.

Hope this makes sense - sorry for the basic maths lesson but thought it illustrated my point :blagblah

They crash well

3 years ago I hit a car in France at 40 mph, hit it square up the arse,if you can imagine the crash in slow motion,as I hit the car with my front wheel all the weight of the bike pivoted around the telever balljoint, then bending the right fork stanchion(bars had been pulled to the left by the impact),then the top yoke broke on the right between the handlebar clamp and top stanchion bolt, then the little bit of frame that sits on top of motor and supports top yoke and top of shock bent by 20mil.

The bike was written of as uneconomical repair, they valued it at £8.5k and I bought it back of the insurance for £2.5k and they gave me £6k.

I repaired it for £500.

bought a new stanchion and top yoke as there were no second hand ones about at the time,

The little frame I straightened, I bought a new one ,made a jig useing it as a reference and got the damaged one back to a better tolerence than the new one, then took the new one back and got a refund:thumb

40k and 3 years later and its going strong:thumb2

Do a search and you will find some pics of it.

I think if the repair quote is more than 70% of the bikes pre accident value it will be written off. My last GSA didn't look that bad visually but had a repair price of £9150!!

There is no frame just a rear subframe and a front section bolted to cast lugs on the top of the crankcases.
The A arm takes the load of the suspenion.
The 2 cast lugs are puny and are probably snapped of with a heavy frontal.
Check them they are just above the large A arm pivot.

Gald you are OK.

Firstly I'm glad you are alive and relatively unscathed.

Having been taken out in similar fashion with the bike sustaining what sounds like less damage than yours, I'd be very surprised if your bike wasn't written off.

If this does happen do NOT accept the first estimate from insurers offer as they will undervalue it and hope you take the cash without question . It's a tedious and painful process, especially when it was not your fault, but if you keep arguing you should be able to secure a significantly better payout from them. You may need to go through the absolute nonsense of 'proving' the market value of your bike by producing evidence such as second hand prices in MCN, bike showrooms etc but it's normally worth it, though of course this delays the payout and they will hope you cave in asap.

Rydale in Cardiff put the repair to mine at over £11k,I reckon they just didnt want to get involved in the crash repair and were hoping to get another sale of a replacement.I did say to them I was hopeing for a write of so I could buy it back though.

I was insured with the BMW scheme at the time of my off and they were great,I did say I was hopeing for more than the £8.5k and they said get examples of bikes in your area that are showing a higher value and they would look at it again, I looked at the values quite hard and for every one that was a higher value there as one of a lower value,so I thought they got pretty much spot on and took the £8.5k, I had protected no cliams so it didnt hit me come renewal time, also I was only a month in the that years insurance and it continued for the rest of the year!!
