Hi,
Hopefully just selling bmw gsa & fancy a change to a Kim 1290 r adventure, what luggage & gps can anyone recommend.

The obvious answer is where do you plan to take the luggage? If you’re going to places with no secure parking and don’t want to unload the bike every night then hard panniers but weight and fixed size work against them. If you’re looking more at going off the beaten trail then I’d go for good quality soft (waterproof) panniers fitted to something like Touratech panniers rails.

I’ve just fitted Ventura luggage to my 1290 SuperDuke GT because it’ll hold 50l, I can fit a tent or roll bag on the small rack that’s part of the frame and it lift off in about 30 seconds leaving only a small pair of bars and no added width.

GPS? Anything that suits your budget but again, where do you want it to take you and can you upgrade it?

If going for metal panniers - have a look a Bumot or Holans (using Holans on mine).

Sat Nav - what are you using on the GSA? - just swap it over ;)

Nav 5 works fine on mine:

Just ordered Bumot panniers/inner bags and one lid bag. Arsey recommendation and he said he'd pay for them if I don't like them :D

I use the (old style) KTM boxes 'cos they were free with the bike. Apart from being ugly they work fine.

My big hate is pannier frames as I probably only use the panniers three or four times a year and I HATE frames, they just look so ugly so the clip on/clip off KTM panniers win hands down for just that reason alone.

Having said that, I prefer soft luggage, if I were buying I'd go for something like the AndyStrapz soft panniers (and yes I know they use frames but the frames are way less obtrusive than metal box frames). Much better looking IMHO and they are top quality.

Andres

I have the AndyStrapz bags and frames and am very happy with them. They are silly expensive by the time you've got them landed from Australia, but I've not seen anything better.

One of you boys with an 1190 Adventure must want a pair of soft waterproof bags that fit on your crashbars and between them hold more than enough clutter for any day out of you don’t want to use panniers?

I’ve got a pair of nice black ones from Slavens Racing that I want to sell for £75 posted if anyone’s interested.

They genuinely are waterproof because I’ve used them on the bike in torrential rain and everything in them stayed bone dry.

Thanks for the reply’s, the Andystrapz & the enduristan both look good it’s if I want frames or not. Had soft luggage before and probably go for it again, the nav v is going with the bike so what are people using.

get the wings short exhaust if you are getting holan nomada cases. You can get 2 x 38 panniers then.

Sat Navs.
Several choices. From the new...
BMW Nav IV at around £600.
BMW Nav V at around £325 mint/used.
Garmin 595 now £390 in some places new.
Garmin 590 around £280 used.

Then there is the 340/350/390 from £120 used.

Personally think the Nav V is a nice option. In maybe a Garmin 660 non button mount.

I'm guessing those would fit an 1290 too?

May or may not, we’ll find out when I’ve posted them to the person who’s offered me some money. I know the 1290 SA as was had different engine bars but as for the newer S or R model I don’t know though I’m sure the Velcro can be moved to make them fit if needed.

They sold already?

For running around on my own on those days / trips, where I want some stuff, but don't want to take panniers or top box, I have fitted the Kriega luggage straps to the rear bodywork.

https://kriega.com/adventure/os-rack-loops

Even though it's just self tapped into, what is in effect just a bit of plastic fairing, it's a very strong hold and I have absolutely no concerns about its strength and durability. It allows me to ride daily with waterproofs, a compressor and a stop n go kit. And that's just day to day running around.

If I want to carry more, I can double up my kriega bags, and if i really want to load up the bike (so lets say camping at Dent in may) I can take panniers and still add the kriega bags. The straps loops look good whilst being pretty under the radar. :thumb2

had the same set up on my 1190 ...

They sold already?

Yep. Well sold subject to them fitting because I’ve said I’ll post them and the buyer pays if they fit and he’s happy with them. I’m a trusting kind of bloke and would sooner the buyer is happy rather than have someone sit there thinking they’ve fucked up and then trying to sell them again.

Bollocks.
Note to self, must be quicker.:blast

I spent ages looking for exactly what I wanted because there’s no point in buying something that isn’t fit for purpose so it’s a bit of a shit that I can’t use them on the GT but then again, I won’t be hoofing that all over unmade roads in Eastern Europe which is where I wanted those ‘essentials’ without the hassle of panniers.

Mrs B has decided that she wants to tag along on this years European adventure and she always has a top box fitted so I can throw junk in that if I don’t want to bung it in a tankbag or strap it on the pillion seat :D

Neat, but remove that charcoal cannister and the stop n go would fit in there.
