Wanted to love the KTM 990 Adv - and there is a lot to love (engine mainly - giving lots of fun), but jerky throttle and brakes are real negatives as is current price

ride them both see which one you like the best.....

The KTM feels like the bikes I get in trouble on; GS is a more staid ride. Biggest real world difference for me was engine feel - KTM feels like a real bike engine (to me), GS has always felt flatter (no pun intended).
KTM is a great long term buy; biggest difference is the feel.
As others say, ride them both, you'll soon know!
Other points; KTM more agile off road, never felt it was likely to kill me; BMW has better pillion.
real test for me - I'm back on a BMW but still looking at a KTM again...

I bought a 990 as I had always fancied a KTM and it was fun and quick. Its definitely a getting into trouble bike.
But I think I would prefer a GS again for distance travel with a lot of road and some fireroad stuff. I never trail rode the KTM like many do, its still a big and heavy beast.
I wished in many ways I had bought a 950 though as that was what I had always fancied, and I lost a little on the 990 when I sold it on (expected, of course).
If you feel this is an itch you have to scratch I would probably look for an older 950, as they seem to make decent money so if you decided to go to the GS you wouldn't do too bad. I think you have to take a risk and live with these a bit before you decide if they are for you. And if you love it then you wouldnt do too bad on a trade up to a 990 either. Theres plenty of the latter about, at good prices. Less so of the former.

Buy the one you like the look of best. They are really good bikes. It just boils down to the one you want to walk into the garage and look at all the time.

When I was selling my 1150ADV I took a 990 for a spin. Always fancied one.
I was very happy to hand it back to the dealer. Brakes were useless - nearly ended up in side of a VW Golf. But maybe I was used to the servo brakes on the BMW.
Great engine but snatchy as hell. Never understood what people were talking about until I rode it.
Good point was that it felt so light around the town.

I found the brakes not especially great, but maybe more like normal rather than GS-like.
Shifted between a few bikes in the last 5 years,-Transalp,Vfr 800,Gs1150x2,cbr600f x2. now got a KTM 950 adv.
Without a doubt its the one that you want to crack open the throttle on.I find it easily as comfy as any of the others,although it does have a gel seat.
Power is instant and i find it difficult not to constantly blast from corner to corner.
High speed stability ,-maybe on a long corner is a bit more flighty than a GS.
I tested a 990 and decided it was not for me ,so bought the 950 which is smooth to ride.
A GS is such a nice predictable bike in any configuration , In my opinion you can't go wrong with them. But if you fancy something similar but different,something that puts a smile on your face each time you ride it then a ktm is a good choice.
As for running costs--why worry ,if someones obsessd with running costs get a cg125

Well i had my 1150gsa for fourteen months and it was a great bike,but was heavy and slow to get going,i now have the 990 and its another world this bike is grunty out of the bends light and easy to move around at any speed,the build quality is tops and as for the jerky throttle well er yes a little but when you read the forums you'd expect it to be unridable,its not great but a G2 throttle cam and if your running akros a remap sorts it and really gotta say if you want super smooth buy a bergman scooter.The Katoom is an exciting bike to ride and for me thats what bikes are meant to be are they not? Granted if your using your bike daily the running costs are higher so i guess like everything its a personal choice,i test rode the 1200,1200gsa and they were nice but when i then rode 990 i was convinced it was a much better bike for me,the hepco boxes are cool and the bike is much easier to keep clean,ok it has a chain but theres alot less to worry about,no diff leaks or failures the WP sus is excellent and the brakes for me are fine the ABS works great and yes not as much feel as the GS but good. They are super reliable with the LC8 engine and the only probs you hear are the occasional fuel pump prob,so all in all if your not sure have a long ride on both.BMW nice girl take to meet your mum,KTM poledancer who may kill ya but sheeeeeet you'll be laughing all the way...........

After riding gs,es for 8 years i too felt like a change.
When Riding with gs 1200s i normally take about 2 pounds more fuel at fuel stops.
the 990 was twitchy at low speeds when i got it altho i dont seem to notice it now.
The 990 takes twice as long to do a normal service as gs (i do my own servicing)but no more expenesive. this would prob even out over 50 000 miles.eg change a clutch on a gs 8 hours. ktm 2 hours.
I personally dont find any diff on the stopping power, just a diff way of applying the brakes.
In my amature hands the gs will go anywhere the ktm goes off road just the ktm is a lot less work and not as prone to getting bogged. the ktm is also a lot more comfortable to stand on the pegs.
I dont feel any diff on comfort on long jorneys ( i have the gel seat)
The ktm is more fun to ride but it could be dangerous for your licence

My best mate still has his 990sm and we both go out for rides (fast) and the bm is still able to keep up with only a couple of unsteady moments , no real difference in speed or acceleration. ( yes before you ask we both have track bikes so we do ride fast).
He has never liked my bm but said that theres not much between them acept maybe for handling in short fast corners.
