1st 600 mile service.

Wait until you see the complete and utter shoddy standard of their care of your machine, only paid for the first 2 services (in between 4 engine replacements). You'll soon discover if you want proper care of your investment, there is no other safer bet than doing it yourself, fcukd if I will ever let a 'Technician' near my bike again!

Totally agree. I worked in a bike workshop for a while and left because I really couldn't accept what the customer was charged for the work that was done. Many bike jobs are fairly simple and within the scope of a reasonably competent home mechanic, it's just a matter of having the confidence to do it. And when it comes to something which is beyond you, there are some excellent independants (such as those we have on here) who will do a better job and not take any organs for it.

If you make a load of chocolate brownies, you'll get a discount :D :blast
There's a thread on here all about it :green gri

There was I thinking I was the only one!

I don't think I will bother with BMW after the first service, I'll go to a reputable garage, as long as they use approved parts it won't affect the warranty.

That is true but remember the Block Exemption Rules dont apply to the Motorcycle industry. So it would be at the dealers or BMW's discression as to honour any Warranty Claim.

However, I've serviced my own brand new vehicles for years now including bikes and never had any problems.

Just be aware though in an accident, if its proven mechanical failure was a cause and correct service proceedures were not followed. Deep shit follows.

I also do not get on well with service departments.

Costs me around £35 for oil, filter and oil seal.

For bikes or cars. Everything else is profit.

Slightly off the point, it's not only the cost of services but the ned to have them done every 6000 miles.

This compares badly with some other manufacturers who have service intervals of 10 or 12 thousand miles. At 6000 miles that's 2 services per year for me in most years. Another argument for seeking out a less expensive option than a BMW dealership

Do it yourself.

If BMW expect people to travel around the world on these things how do they expect to get the bike in for Service half way down Road of Bones in outer Mongolia.

Point being some common sense needs to apply here for DIY work.

I also think of this.

I paid for my bike, I own it not BMW. I'll do what I like with it.

Warranty is a good will gesture. But Sales of Goods Act trumps that in Court so they had better sell me a machine fit for purpose.... Adventure!!

Very valid point.

It's true,' Technicians are no more than swap jockeys, same with cars, and if they plug a diagnostic machine in and it shows no fault they are stuffed, 'real' mechanics, hands on,play it by ear, are a dying breed.
Not all Techs obviously, as some were out there doing it before ECUs and chips etc.

best quote I have seen on here :beerjug:

I negotiated a free first service when I bought the bike.
