I've just had my 1150GS. 11 months old and 12,000 miles, in for a 12,000 miles service. Amongst other problems I'm told that the rear pads need replacing, the front pads have 2 - 3,000 miles left but that all three discs are shot due to excessive scoring and pitting - has anybody else suffered this kind of rate of failure before and can anyone explain how pads can outlast discs??

Had the same thing happen to mine also a 2002 1150 GS but at the 6000 mile service, Wollaston's changed both front discs under warranty! Winter didn't help either!!!

My 02 1150 also has pitting onone part of the front discs. I thought it was maybe caused by the bike being stationary for a while, all winter perhaps. they also rust slightly if not ridden for a day or two. Has anybody else noticed this. The 1100 discs are still perfect and always shiny

Hi Ants - same county here ! whereabouts are you?

My 02 Adv has the same rusty front discs as Dennis if it sits for a couple of days.

Wouldn't have thought there could be any way the original pads will outlast the original discs. And new discs will probably not do your existing pads any favours.

Disc Wear

I've not had this problem with my 02 GS yet, but it's due for 6000 service this month.

I have had this problem with my car. The original pads are 80% worn and apparently according to the garage the discs are worn and lipped. When I question how an 18month old vehicle has to have new discs, they inform me it's due to the make up of the pads. Manufacturers no longer use asbestos and the substitute for this is very abrasive. I was also told that this is not uncommon for brakes these days.

Hope thats shed a little light on the matter.

It's not uncommon for the discs to rust a little if not used for a few days. Happened on all my bikes, and probably cars as well.

My '01 1150 also has some pitting on the front discs.

Thanks for the replies and the input people.

I'm pleased to report that the discs are to be replaced under warranty.

A couple of points of interest - I've had a lot of input and help from a couple of other GS riders I know directly, one of whom has run up 90,000 miles on an original set of discs

I was also mooching around at a dealer in who had a selection of 2nd hand BM's including GS's and it does appear that the longevity of the 1100GS is going to be superior to the 1150GS

Cheers

Ant
