2009 R1200GS

I emailed my friend who knows how to spell BMW about this. He tells me why I am getting more excited about the prospect of getting further shaftings from my local BMW dealer for servicing and losing huge amounts in depreciations whilst they continue to sing the tune that their bikes defy gravity :D

thats nice for you :)

2009 GS will have a diesel option with particle filter. More torque, same power, better milage to the gallon etc.

i think the diesel comment was a joke :augie

Lets see....the Kaboom weighs 199kg (same as the GS) and yet the engine alone weighs 40kg less? What is the hell is the frame made of....thick walled RHS and concrete?

Having had both bikes, I'd take some convincing that they doi weigh the same. The KTM deffo feels lighter but certainly not 40kg or even 20. The BMW has the engine as a structural part of the bike unlike the KTM, and the KTM has much more plastic fairing bits. So my guess is that the non engine parts of the KTM are heavier than the BMW.

If they watercool the boxer (must be possible as per the CX500?) the stylist will struggle not to make it the uglyiest engine from uglyville.

If only this was true,i would love a diesel gs .Always wanted a diesel bike & if i ever found an engine good enough i would build my own .
All i want is 100 mph with 100+mpg :D

Well you shouldnt have to wait long Royal College of military science / US Army have been developing one for a while as the military want to move to a totally diesel vehicle fleet, bottom end is based on a kawk 600 top end is their own design, one of the design briefs was that it should be able to maintain a constant 90mph on roads and do 100 mpg. They keep threatening to do a civilian, which is supposed to be soon. I believe the military one went into production in 06.
It is supposed to do over 500miles to a tank, and top end is round about the ton.

Sorry to be a real spotter, but for anyone interested here is the spec sheet for the military bike

BMW are big enough to make their own engines, and certainly have the technology. What chances a water cooled boxer?

Don't Rotax manufacture their single cylender engines? They cetainly used to manufacture the lump in the F650. They even (I know not now) outsourced the assembly work to Aprillia.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't the engine be able to pass the 2009 engine emission regs?

'cos it's all pish :nenau :D

AFAIK Euro 5 standards apply to '08/'09 [1] so the current R engine should meet them shouldn't it :nenau

[1] This may be cars only, not sure.

:beerjug:

Well, we wouldn't notice much difference in noise or rev range would we?;););)

got my email this evening :type

VERY interesting...i'm VERY restricted in what i can say you understand

what i AM ok to say is that he was able to confirm that there is to be a major change in the engine layout/configuration for the flagship model in the GS line-up on the 2009 model year bike

:thumb2

the bad news is that i'll STILL be to young to own a GS in 2009 :blast

i hope you enjoy it you old tossers :rob

Maybe the 1200GS will become a modern classic after all..............the last of the boxers.

Don't think I'd want to be the first few buying a new GS with a completely new engine.

and....

A fireblade weighs about 175 dry therefore we saying the GS would be 160 dry with that engine without changing anything else???

I think we can safely say thats b&ll@cks!!!

What frame :nenau

Andres

I hear what you are syaing but no matter how you look at it the current GS (and other boxers) do have a frame. Of course the older 1100s and 1150s almosat didn't have a frame.

Are we not forgetting something here? haven't BMW just introduced a new 1200 motor with double overhead cams with the new HP2 Sport?? (something they said they couldn't do due to engine width) But they have done it! Surely this will be the next motor in the GS??

This really is a new development - not just a re-working as the hex head 1200 is to the 1150 oil heads.

BMW may well introduce new engine architecture (for the last 15 years there had been rumours of an in line twin - but noone saw an in line twin with a third con-rod.........typical BMW original thinking!) - but the flat twin has to stay. Despite new ventures into fours, singles and twins the boxer is where it is at.

BMW have sold as many 1200 GSs in the past four years as they sold of all the previous GSs put together! We have voted again and again with our wallets regarding what we want! BMW will deliver - if the current boxer does not meeet new codes - no problem they will adapt, re-engineer and come up with a result..............I hope:confused:
