2014 RT's GROUNDED! DO NOT RIDE!

so there we are then. sat waiting to board the ferry on 6th of june when a phone rang in front of me. Chap answered his phone, longish, fairly angry conversation (angry from this end). He then pushes a 2014 RT out of the queue and tells his mates he cannot go on holiday as, (and I quote him, word for word). "it seems the bastards at BMW cant build bikes properly. All that money and ive just been told not to ride it". His mate tells him it must be a wind up. At this point I went over to him and told him I had heard about the problem, and no its not a wind up (trying to be supportive kind of thing). At that point one of his mates shouted out as he pointed at mine. BET YOU WISH YOU HAD AN OLD ONE LIKE THAT. (Didn't go down well). As I set off onto the ferry, his girl was crying and he looked gutted. I really felt for him.

Good luck with your local dealers, I have known most of the dealer network for many years & know that they will do whatever they can to help if you give them the chance.

Good luck with your endeavours, holidays & here's to as painless a fix as possible.

TJ, not "TJ"

Please continue posting here fella, as I'm out of country and therefore out of the loop at the moment. And value your input.
Don't let these muppets put you off.

I am surprised BMW have not thought of this.

The problem is with the ESA shocks

So

Replace all shocks with non ESA shocks, disable the ESA.

Customer gets his bike + compensation.

Cost of non ESA shocks about £1000 a pair.

When ESA shocks are sorted replace at the dealers.

Yes there are a lot of bikes out there but much easier to replace the shocks than getting new GS bikes through the production line.

Well Ive done it, my RT was in a yard, I had to move it so leg over start, engage first heart thumping with fear i trickled out round the barn parked and survived, wooooo!what excitement, now back to just staring at it again as it is now just an ornament , in the interest reporting the truth no animal was used or knowingly hurt exercising this death defying stunt

Any news from the BMW UK yet? From the 0 mile unridden bike customer perspective (but whose bike has been built and is furniture at dealer's) Has anyone tried to ask for a K1600 perm replacement thereby rejecting the RT?

It will be soon a month. With no news. It bears badly in my opinion regarding ETA. And I wouldn't want to have my 14 reg 0 miler in March 15.... I d rather reject now and get a 15 bike if/when sorted. Or the new Paneuropean for that matter. Or a K1600 now ala US practice...?

Nice trip report. I'm thinking of doing a similar one later this week. Could you give me some advice.

What display should I have on the dash?
Did you manage to get the abs light to go out?
Can I use the quick shift to go back into neutral?
How much oil did you use?
Should I put a warning triangle out and have stickers on my helmet?

Thanks

What does your dealer say ? Have you asked him about a K1600 ?

Eh? :blast

I spoke to a good friend who is a service manager at a BMW Motorrad dealership and they have yet to recieve ANY news from BMW with regards the rear shock. Even he is suprise how long it is taking to even get an ETA for replacements.

Whats the betting that BMW end up owning Sachs at the end of this ?

Sachs go bust due to the debt it owes BMW - BMW buy sachs for a deutsch mark and underwrite the debt - write off debt as tax loss Job sorted !:augie

"Sachs will have liability insurance"
Its not Sachs on this model but whoever made them must be in trouble.
The liability insurance is for injury claims etc and will not cover them for replacing faulty goods. So if we imagine 8000 faulty shocks at say £500 each = £4,000,000 to manufacture, probably now scrap and then replace them with shocks which may cost more to make and probably not get paid more for the company is set to loose £5,000,000. If BMW turn the screws and demands they compensate owners + loss of good faith, labour to fit etc the supplier must be finished off.
BMW would then have to find an alternative supplier, develop the product, test it, tool up and so on, this would take a long time, so perhaps BMW taking over the supplier may be the only option.

Are you 100% sure on that?

What about product liability, business interrupton, reputational damage, public liability........... insurance - all pretty standard for most big businesses

They will have product liability insurance - not the type a plumber or gardener has, but specifically for this type of scenario...

Not 100% sure at all, needs the full team of lawyers who will be working on this case to determine who pays.
I do know if I design a product for my employer and it turns out to be faulty the company picks up the bill for fixing it.

Below is a quote from the Association of British insurers.

What it covers

Product liability insurance protects you against the cost of compensation for:
•personal injuries caused by your faulty product
•loss of or damage to property caused by your faulty product
•unforseeable circumstances such as product faults that your quality control system could not identify

Product liability insurance may not cover you for:
•faulty products resulting from bad workmanship
•financial losses to a business or person caused by your faulty product
