2016 gsa rust issue

All this " you haven't washed it using fairy farts dissolved in unicorn tears" is absolute bolloxs! A new motorcycle should not look like that in seven months, and BMW should hang their heads in shame.

Looked at my daughter's partners newish gsa1200 (17 grands worth) I hope he doesn't wash it too hard. Ridiculous I've power washed ship board and shore processing machines hydraulics etc and if these had the poor finish of that bike I'd be replacing them after a month with severe corrosion (but I didn't have to so why?) Ridiculous finish on that bike. I would say and some of the shipboard stuff was just mild steel but carefully multi coats of paint yes it did show corrosion but that was after a long period of power washing and foaming with antibacterial and degreasing and knocks and scrapes. Perhaps BM could learn about marine paints.

There's nothing wrong with using a jet wash on these bikes. It's the cleaning products used in conjunction with the power washer that are the key. I always have, and always will use my Karcher to clean my bikes. Never had a hint of corrosion on any of them.;)

But marine plant is painted that way for a reason, and that reason isn't applicable to (most) motorcycles. I think we would all agree the paint should be a bit more resilient, but if you take reasonable care of your bike it will not corrode and fall to bits.

My 10 year old bicycles (on and off road), left outside , never really "washed" , never treated look like new bar a few exposed chrome parts ... but look way better than your bike !!!!

I know its a nuisance but could you try and take a picture of the inner frame, from the front, deep in-between the radiators. Where the front suspension wishbone linkages attach.

Theres a fair bit of framework inside there and its unlikely to have been jetwashed or cleaned as its deep inside.

Whats going on with that metalwork?

If the inner frame is really dirty, give it a wipe over with a cloth please so we can see (its hard but careful access can get you there, just be careful of any sharp bits). I'd be very interested to see whats happened to the joints and paint inside there.

Bump?

Will try to find time, leaving for a weeks vacation in a few days. I didnt jet wash up top over the radiators neither. I must admit, I forgot that area/didn't realize it existed. but I will try to cram my phone in there for a photo.

All I see is top of engine corrosion?

Photo doesn't show the frame.

When you get a chance, in daylight, have a good look up there and specifically look for frame condition.

Theres lots to see up there, let us know what you find.

Just wipe the crap off the frame tubes first. Is it the same, or better condition than the rest of it?

I wash it with a brush and spray. What makes you think that is so bad? I have been washing motorcycles and ATV's for 20 years the same way. It has never caused rust or issues.

Yes but in those 20 years things change.

Paint quality is different
Manufacturing materials are different
Chemicals used are different
Environmental conditions are different

So many things change over time and you have to be aware and adapt.

(Nice pic by the way, same weather here on my last ride haha)

Its true, but with all those things it has improved.
Paint can now last much longer on cars. They even dip the steel in a bath now prior to painting, to hit every surface with an impenetrable primer.
Soaps are more eco-Bullshit, and less harmful to paint, also making cleaning more difficult :P
The air today is about the same.

That is my ride to work this time of year... Thats why I actually got the GSA was protection from rain. Otherwise I would have gotten the 1000XR :)

You do know that they don't all corrode? Plenty of happy owners.;)

That may well be the case. The risk is you may be one with issues. From everything I have heard so far, BMW seems to be sanding behind its 12 month paint warranty. We will see if BMW USA does the same as in Briton.
The dealer has been bad, but so far corp has been nothing but nice. First thing the dealer told me to do was take a chore boy and rub the rust off.
We will see what they say. I do not see the outcome being a bad outcome. Worst case they might end up replacing all of the bad parts on the bike, best case they buy it back, and I get another BMW. I am a bit gun shy as well, I may have it fixed and trade it in.

Yep I get that but for 17k there should not be as many issues as we are seeing... and there should be more consistency in prep...

I wonder if rusted parts that come off warranty bikes aren't just poorly recycled...
