2017 KTM Adventure Range.

Type?

If I had the problems some have had with their bikes, trust me, I'd jump ship. But I haven't, hence why nothing else even tempts me.;)

Tell me, other than bhp, what else can the 1290SA offer me that the GSA can't?
Less weight
A bigger smile
And a larger fuel bill

Off road/competition - they came late to road bikes compared to the other manufacturers. The KTM website front page says READY TO RACE in huge text and first pic is of a dirt bike.

Further down the page they state ' The adventure starts where the road ends'

That might work for some folks but it was not the reason for me.

I was deciding between a GS and a GSA when, due to an unfavourable trade in price, I decided to have a look at the competition.

The KTM is a tall bike and so as I wobbled off the forecourt the guess was it would not be for me.

The reality was it's lighter to handle and just put a big grin inside my lid. Yes it's powerful but it also feels like you are riding a motorbike. The controls could be better but again that became another attraction. Something new to learn.

The GS is vanilla great. The KTM has an attitude.

Adv Bikes

They need to add quite a lot to compete. Well down on power to just about everyone and they don't have an HP Enduro anymore which I guess was the closest to the R.

Me and some friends were talking about this a few days ago. Used to be on a trip up north most of what you saw were gs/a and a few tourers and sports bikes. A couple of weeks ago when we went up there were hardly any. Most of them were Triumph with a smattering of other big adventure bikes the GS included. The k1600 seems to be doing quite well but other than that bmw seems to be loosing market share to everyone as far as Adventure bikes are concerned.
The wife and i were up in scotland end of may and all we could see was gs s everywhere, with the odd dl 1000 thrown in,a pal of mine works for a bike dealer in the north and he reckons BMW and YAMAHA are the two best selling brands this year by far,BM just beating YAM,by a couple of hundred:thumb2

I don't care who has the largest range / sells the most bikes etc - but KTM probably out sell BMW as they manufacture more bikes and I doubt they are storing them all up somewhere - admittedly most of them are competition machines.

BMW have a large range of road bikes, in fact a fairly large range of adventure bikes, and they suit some folk (as do pipes and slippers)

My KTM suits me, if I had designed it would have had a few tweaks, but as it goes I cannot see another bike I would rather have, just the odd feature I wish mine did have.

What is great for everyone is the huge choice now, pretty much an Adv bike for everyones budget and taste.

I think KTM are transitioning from niche market to mainstream and aiming for the "high end" alongside BMW and Ducati rather than competing with the Jap players, Triumph I think are trying to sit somewhere between the Japs and the rest of the Europeans and from what I can see probably doing just that and stealing sales from BMW and the Japs.

I think the next 1190 needs cruise control and the base model should lose the spoked wheels, I would also chuck a low level exhaust on it so the panniers would not have to stick out so far / be so small, or at least tuck it in like on my V-Strom 650 which has a high exhaust that barely sticks out at all unlike the KTM one which is about the size of a beer barrel and stuck right out into the road.

I thought you were in love with the S10 last month?

How come the change of allegiance so soon?

I could not put up with an effing chain otherwise the KTM might be a good choice :)

Good luck to them then (and I'm not taking the piss), but they need to start investing more money, and opening more dealers if they want more sales.:rob

The next 1190 will be a 1290 and yes it should have cruise control as standard but not with that ugly blocky switch on the right hand side

Low level exhausts are available. I've seen 1190 Adventures with 1290 Super Duke cans fitted

KTM already do a bike like that, it's called a a Super Duke GT.

Personally I hope they leave the basics of both the 1190's well alone. The R is a proper off road capable big bike, the vanilla is a reasonably good all round bike and the SA covers off your 'GS' type rider's requirements.

I genuinely don't get all this chain bollox :nenau

I'm on 12,000 miles now and rode down through France and back a few weeks ago. I didn't adjust my chain before I went and have not since I got back. I oiled it before I went, once out there and once since I got back.

Where's the problem with that :comfort

As long as they still provide hand written receipts I'll be happy :)

I don't get it either. I spend far more time putting fuel in the bike than on chain maintenance. The way things turned out with my GSA I spent a huge amount more time and money on FD maintenance than any chain driven bike I have ever owned.

That would be stupidly loud unless you can fit the whole system. The main silencer on the SDR is under the engine and not the visible can.

I've seen it and heard it and I didn't think it was that loud, but admittedly, what's loud to you may not be loud to me

Plus 2 on the chain thing

There is an awful lot of bollocks spoken re chains and their maintenance and the majority of it is on this forum :D

True but did it maybe have the full system, silencer under the engine? I haven't heard it but a few Oz and US based guys have tried just the can and abandoned it for being too loud as in almost completely unsilenced apparently.

That looks to me like the the GT front end. I guess their design dept are maintaining the family 'identity' across the range (check out shots of the new SD).

For some reason it reminds me of Munch's 'The Scream' :D

It's hard to tell from the poor pictures what else they've changed but it seems more evolution than revolution.......

The last one was ugly enough, but this thing takes ugly to a whole new level. :barf

I hope it looks better in the flesh.:rob
