I am not sure what 'grade' of 20w50 engine oil was used, ie fully synth, semi-synth or mineral.

i have been able to only find motul 3000 4T 20w50 oil, but it says that it is motor oil mineral. cheers

Dont bother with fully synth as its a waste of money.Use semi-synth if you want to give the bike a treat or just normal mineral oil.
These old tanks effectively have car engines in them so no need to bother about any bike specific oils.
Remember 15/50 or 20/50 and no lower than SF or SG spec

Oh yeah, just leave the grammar nazis to play with themselves.:augie:aidan

a R1150GS but

an 1150GS

Thankyou.

To the OP top it up with anything you like as it won't make any difference.

If you do a search for threads relating to oil it's best if you shop for a month before locking up the house, parking yourself in front of the computer and starting to wade throught the myriad pages.

My summary? Semi synth 5w-40 works a treat. Mines done 58,000 miles on the stuff, Halfords own label. 10W-40 or 20W-50 make it rattle a bit less but make the starter motor work harder in the winter. Sunflower oil might be pushing the boundaries a bit too far unless you keep the revs
below 3,000:toungincheek. Don't use virgin olive oil, 1150GS's aren't compatible with virgins.:)

I got the oil today and she has drunk nearly 300ml in under 1,000 miles. is that right?

typically 1lt per 1000 miles.

strange though, some go through it, some dont. again typically, after 20 thou miles they dont go through as much.

I would take it all out and start again with what I knew I had put in!

If it is a fairly light on miles engine you need to check the oil on the centre stand after a ride. Let it stand for 10-15 minutes before crawling around under the left pot trying to see the "cunningly hidden from standing view" sight glass.

Many 1150s use oil at a guzzle until about the 20,000 - 25,000, sometimes 30,000 mile mark. Then they just stop using it and go forever after. You can't kill an 1150GS unless it is cremate, or sacrificed as a target for a Challenger Mark II tank!

At last, a proper oil thread!!!! None of this technical guff, just apostrophes and the Peoples' Front of Judea :thumb

I can't wait until some poor newbie tosser types "oil" into the search function and finds this one :green gri

.......or was that "The Judea People's Front"?
