Not sure where they get it, but I doubt they have their own refinery
Next time I am there I will check the S? rating

Phew..... So in conclusion the facts as we know them are:

1. The Boxer Engine is in relative terms, low revving.
2. The Boxer Engine has a seperate gearbox running in it's own oil.
3. The Boxer Engine has a dry car type clutch.
4. The Boxer Engine is Air/Oil cooled.

Therfore I conclude that there is no need whatsoever to use a "Motorcycle oil" and that a 20/50 Infernal combustion (spark ignition not diesel) oil API min SG is acceptable.

I filled the GS with 20w50 SILKOLENE the other day. Much better. The engine sounds much quiter and seems much happier. Also used MOBIL SHC fully synthetic g/box oil. I 've used it before on my 1100, but it made a massive difference this time. The gearbox is MUCH smoother and it feels as if there is a little sponge on the gear lever soaking up the changes. ( The only way I can describe it ). The old oil in the bevel and g/box was only about 1000 miles old, so it wasn't just because it was fresh oil. When I used it on the 1100, it made a difference, but no as much as on the 1150 this time. Gear changes are noticably much smoother and more positive. Some people have tried it and noticed no differnce apparently, but I would recommend it. You can buy it from Demon tweeks by the litre and it's GL5 spec etc.

I buy the cheapest oil i can with the correct grade, from K-Mart - usually around $17 for 5 litres ( ~£7)

I used Morris 15w 50 standard oil this time to keep the temparture down on a visit to Spain last week. Thrashed the bike 2000 miles and the rid only went up to 6 bars in town work but the rest of the time was down to 5 bars. And it only used a cup full in that time, much better than when using 10w 40.

....not sure that I understand how the viscosity of an oil can affect the running temperature of the engine....?

My thoughs precisely. If anything, a thicker oil will increase temperature slightly as it increases 'drag' (for want of a better word) within the engine.

What the thicker oil will do in hotter places such as Spain is keep lubricating the engine more effectively at the higher ambient temperatures where 10W40 will tend to become too thin.

Swapped my 10w40 for 20w50 in my 1200 the other day... The engine sounds much nicer now... less rattles

Same here. I've only had the bike about a month or so and was worried about the rattling particularly at around 2500 rpm. Nothing like my 1150RT or previous boxers. Swopped to BMW 20/50 from Castrol GPS 10/40 on the advice of Tony at Coopers, Reading and it sounds much quieter now.

Surely with the approach of winter, this is the wrong time of year to be putting 20w50 in the bike?

I'm going to leave the 10w40 in mine until spring and then go for the thicker stuff.

Only if you intend to ride in temperatures below -10 celcius! I ride all year round but it never gets that cold in the South East during the day.

I've used 15W50 anyway, which I think is recommended down to -15 celcius - a little bit more leeway should I suffer some mental abberation and decide to impersonate a penguin. Er.....a penguin riding a bike

Castrol GP 20/50 should be in stock at Southport Superbikes next week, sorry only in 1 litres for resale but available in bulk through the work shop.

Just bunged in 3.75 litres of TMC 20w50 into the 1150. What a difference. The whole plot runs smoother, quieter and with a lot less clattering when it gets hot in town. Put a litre of synthetic oil in the gearbox as well, and that's another huge difference. I'm a convert, but monitoring the situation...

Mines a lot smoother and quieter than my mates 1150, and is faster too. Mind you, it is a 1200.
