My mate has just bought a Garmin 350 LM with a canbus connection to wire in. I am going to fit the unit to his 1200gs over the weekend but should I cut the canbus in to the cable or go straight to the battery.

I have fitted two 660's to GSA's before by adding canbus plugs to the cables but the 350lm cable has a suppresser and voltage stabilizer fitted which the 660 didn't.

No harm in running it from the battery. The supplied power lead has a fuse inline, so worries.

If you hook it up to the canbus controlled power, e.g., the forward accessory socket or the built-in GPS connector, the power will shut off during a fuel stop and so will the 350, even though it has an internal battery. I thinkyou can hit the power switch to keep it going on battery power, but am not sure.

If navigating a saved route, I like to leave my GPS on during the few minutes it takes to fuel up, in order to avoid waiting for re-capturing satellites (although the 350 is amazingly fast doing that) and the inevitable re-calc, so this was my choice and why I recommend going straight to the battery.

Thanks for the reply, I have opted for the can-bus option, I removed the inline fuse but left the suppresser and voltage stabilizer connected.
