It is my understanding that 4D was set up and is owned by several of the insurance companies.
doesn't appear to be the case - it is owned by two individuals

Haha yeah maybe. Now that wouldn’t surprise me. Not saying they’re dodgy but my understanding is most are descendants of Dick Turpin.
I have been insured a couple of times with brokers that use 4th Dimension , on those occasions I had a written note attached to my file that I would not in any circumstances authorise 4th Dimension taking possession of my motorcycle or be involved in any repairs or claims procedure , when one broker queried this I told them because IMHO 4th Dimension area a bunch of disreputable shysters who rack up bills for their own benefit .I won’t ever use any insurance company again that has anything to do with 4th D after my terrible experience.
When was your claim? because I’ve read you saying this several times and can only say again that last year Hastings refused to handle anything to do with my claim, insisting 4th D handle anything to do with motorcycle claims for them. 4th D then wouldn’t even put my claim to the third party until I accepted one or both of their services. I repeatedly asked Hastings to represent me to the party and they refused saying 4th D will do it.I think it is all down to how you handle things, I had no issues with them - let them do the claims management and you choose your own repairer - simples.
An internet search indicates that historically many of the main motorcycle insurance underwriters in the UK have used 4th Dimension. This includes Ageas, Aviva, Axa, Hastings, LV and of course Marker Study, so does anyone know of companies who don't ? I know you can elect to use your own repair agent but as tspivey says above, 4th dimension may insist on you taking up their service before they agree to releasing their grip on the claim that the underwriter will have sent their way.
I can't remember exactly, I need to check back, around a couple of years ago now, however at the time 4D said that they would do all the repairs, I said thanks, but no thanks and I would will go to a local BMW dealer - the bike was rideable (just) and the dealer was only about 4 miles away. The reason I did this was because I was pretty sure that 4D would not use the best repair shops with all the specialist knowledge and tools that an authorized BMW dealer should have. I repeatedly asked Hastings to represent me to the party and they refused saying 4th D will do it.
My situation was saved by the third parties insurance company taking over after they’d accepted responsibility. I was then able to cancel, within 14 days my agreement with 4th D and had my bike taken to my dealer by the third party insurer for repair.
During the time it was with 4th D it suffered further damage including a completely trashed pannier, scratched windshield and nose cone. Plus they were very awkward and delayed the release from them.
Never, ever having anything to do with Hastings or any company that uses 4th D.
The difference may be that my claim was 100% no fault and I wasn’t claiming off my policy.
Is 4D a BMW approved service supplier.
MY question is - if the bike is still under warranty and 4D do repairs (and they are not an approved service agent) - does this invalidate warranty if a repair they have done subsequently becomes faulty.
e.g. The front end needs replacing but subsequently the headlight (that 4D have been messing with) fails
If it is a new bike with a three year warranty this could be a problem - not realised at the time of letting your bike go to 4DYou would need to check your terms of the warranty if the Bike is still covered after an accident - depending on the parts replaced (whether it's repaired at an approved repairer, or not).
